US Bank calls it a 'line swap', and it costs a hard inquiry (TU for me yesterday). Moved a 5k limit and closed the card - reflected this morning.

Adding some data points while I go through this process:

8/24: If the resulting line on the recipient card is over $25,000, US Bank requires the first two pages of the prior year's 1040. Your tax return can be either mailed or faxed. If you take it in to a US Bank branch, they will fax it for you. I had a branch fax it for me, and when I called two business days later they confirmed receipt of the fax.

8/26: I asked them to complete the line swap since they had the fax, but the AF had been charged on the donor card (which I was closing), so the donor card had a balance of $75. They were willing to move all but $500 from the donor card to the recipient card, but I wanted to move the entire line. I was advised to call customer service for options, since they couldn't refund the AF on the card I was closing.

8/26: I called the customer service number on the back of my card. They issued an AF refund, which they said should post in two days, at which time I can call back the underwriting department to complete the line swap.

8/27: I checked first thing in the morning and the AF credit had already posted. The card now has a zero balance. I called the credit card underwriter number again and they were able to submit the request to move the entire limit from the card I'm closing over to the surviving card. The process will take 3-5 business days, and I will receive a letter in the mail when it's complete. Obviously I will also be able to check online in the interim.

8/28: Hard inquiry on TU.

8/30 and 8/31: I used the automated customer service line on the donor card. The original limit for the donor card was still on record.

9/1: I used the automated customer service line on the donor card. The original limit for the donor card was still on record, however I also called the number for the recipient card, and the combined limits of both cards is the credit limit of record. The donor card still looks the same online.

9/2 - 9/10: Calls to the automated customer service system yielded identical results as they did on 9/1.

9/4: I received an alert that the new limit on the recipient card was reported to Experian on 8/31.

Message navy yesterday about combining limits and got this message.

Navy Federal Response 11/16/2014 : Thank you for your message. At this time we are no longer moving credit limits in between existing credit card accounts. If you would like an increase on your existing Flagship account, we will need for you to submit for a credit limit increase for review by the Credit Card Lending Team.

I've struck out twice now in attempts to do this. I get the same message as listed above.

Just a quick update: My closed card has finally been removed (today) from my online banking account.

So that's well over a month to complete the process from the first call to closing the donor card.

If you believe the automated phone system at US Bank, the Club Carlson Visa's $22,000 limit is still intact.

A couple of other updates are below. I will add these back to the running list of updates in the correct chronological sequence the next time I post a new update. The letters that I reference were in a stack of mail that I finally got around to reading.

Note again that Club Carlson is the donor card, and the FlexPerks is the recipient.

8/25: US Bank mailed me a letter with this date, telling me that my request for a CLI on the FlexPerks card was declined. Reason: "Conflicting application information." I didn't request a standalone CLI, but apparently the line swap request follows some alternate process that's based on how CLIs are handled.

8/28: US Bank mailed me a letter with this date, informing me that I've been given a CLI to $47,000 on the FlexPerks card "...in recognition of the exceptional way you handle your account."

Also, this isn't exactly breaking news, but the decline letter cited my "FICO Risk Score Classic 04 Bankcard" score, which ranges from 250 to 873.

I haven't been on for quite a while. About 6-7 weeks ago I got my mother an increase on her FIA card from 15k to 25k. I was also able to get her the BOA cash Rewards card. They started her with 10k but we recond it and got her started with 25k instead. My question is, when would it be okay to combine these 2 cards so she can have a 50k limit? I feel it's too soon to just do it now.

I am not aware of any timing limitations for moving limits. Last year within a few weeks I opened a Privileges, Fidelity Amex and a Merrill+, and shuffled the limits around to get the Privileges card to $55,000.

Sometime between my 10/8 update, above, and this morning, calls to the US Bank automated phone system no longer provide an account summary when I dial in and authenticate. The call gets routed to an agent for assistance.

The Club Carlson card is also no longer available on my account page on usbank.com. From start to finish, my experience combining and closing these accounts took almost 60 days.

Re Amex self-serve page. Last month I successfully reallocated a chunk of Costco funds to BCP. A couple of days later, I wanted to do it for another two cards and it was declined. The notice I received stated that only one reallocation can be done per month. So I tried again and it worked after the month was up.

Mendel and myself have reported that recently BOA has been Combining limits via SP. https://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=558296&p=5465386

I asked the UW if it would be a hard of soft and he told me it would be a soft. I asked a few more times and he said 100% and he was correct. I asked if it was a policy change and he only could answer " we change policy's when needed"

In any case, BOA may have changed...
