Student Loans - Can I make payments while in forebearance?

Basically, I'm trying to work out the ins and outs of how the payments will impact my budget, so, I was going to start out paying a smaller amount and work up to the full payments by the time my forebearance runs out in May. Does anyone know if I can do this without ENDING my forebearance and being required to make full payments out the gate? Trying to set myself up for success here. Thanks!

 

PS: Can I direct that all payments be applied to the principle?
