Medical debt showing up but I already paid!

Every year in January I order my 3 free reports. Equifax came back clean, Experian says I need to manually verify myself before they give me a report, and Trans Union has a collection account! This account was from an emergency room visit for my son back in Feb 2013, and I paid the amount shown and have a credit card statement that shows the amount being paid in May 2013. It was reported to collections in June 2013. It's for a low amount - just over $100. I'd very happily pay if I can get it off my report.

Here's what I have done so far:

1. NOT contacted the CA at all

2. Contacted the bill provider for the hospital which is the OC. They are insisting they don't see the same evidence of payment as I do and asked for the credit card statement. I faxed it to the OC on Friday. There's not enough information on the statement to charge my credit card (missing the expiration date and CCR code)

3. Started a dispute process with TransUnion online claiming that the debt was paid, and also mailed them copies of my credit card statement showing the line item where it was indeed paid..

I did all this before finding out about this forum. My questions are:

1. Did I do anything fatal to getting the negative collections item removed?

2. What will likely happen next with the OC and the dispute with TransUnion?

3. I know this CA reports to Experian as well so I am assuming that is why they want me to manually verify myself, as there is an Unpaid Collections on my report.

4. Should I fax a PFD letter to the CA next week to try to go that route as well?

Follow all these steps:

http://www.whychat.5u.com/GUIDEBOOK.html

You do not need to delete old addresses, but you DO need to opt out to prevent any "poisoning" of your reports by JDBs ( junk debt buyers)

Send TU the initial dispute letter if they do not delete the account, or if it is changed to a paid collection.

Transunion still has until February 15th to respond so I'm waiting to send the initial letter depending what they do with the account.

Experian, I sent the Initial HIPAA letter as you specified almost two weeks ago but have not heard back. Do I keep waiting, send another one, or do something else at this point?

Transunion completed its investigation. The only thing they changed was adding a remark that says "Remarks: ACCT INFO DISPUTED BY CONSUMR; >PLACED FOR COLLECTION<.

Do I no send the initial HIPAA dispute letter to TransUnion as well or do I jump to a later step?

Your next step is to send the medical DV to the reporting CA,

http://whychat.5u.com/ltrcavalhipaa.html

one letter for each CRA they are reporting to ( in the same envelope) As soon as you have the proof of receipt ( from the tracking certified mail # ) you send each CRA the follow up dispute with a copy of "their" letter and a copy of the proof of receipt.

OK, things are starting to happen.

1. I sent the medical DV to the reporting CA and it was delivered today.

2. I was planning to send the follow-up dispute letter to Experian and TransUnion tomorrow, BUT....

3. Today I received a letter in the mail for the very first time from the reporting CA. I assume this was in response to the initial HIPAA dispute letter I sent Experian as discussed earlier in this thread. This letter has the account number, date of service, orginal amount, interest calculation, the itemized statement from the original provider, the name of the patient, that it was an emergency department visit. Basically, I think this was a debt verification.

So my question is:

Do I proceed now with the follow-up dispute letter to Experian and TransUnion OR since the CA has verified, is there some other path to take? This verification was sent by the CA PRIOR to their receiving the medical DV letter today.

Also a follow-up question: Even though I already paid this bill over a year ago, to make this go away I am fine paying it again since it is so low of an amount. At what point should I contact the OC? Or is that something I should not do?

Paying it won't get it deleted unless you work out a "Pay for Delete" agreement.

If you paid it and you have proof that you paid it, then it will be removed, it might take time.

I worked very hard to make the HIPAA letter program as complete and simple as I could -- when I suggest that people follow the program it is because it was designed to achieve the desired results.

Why in the WORLD would anyone want to stop following the program because of something a lying cheating scum scam CA wrote??

Send the follow up disputes to the CRAs

WhyChat you are a genius. I heard from TransUnion and Experian in the last two days. Both have deleted the account in question.

At this point I want to make sure this never comes back. What is the best way to accomplish that? I know never to pay the CA Should I somehow try to pay the OC? Will doing so inadvertently lead to it coming back on my CR?

Why Chat is on vacation this week, but here's my $.02...

  1. Keep your documentation from EX and TU that states the accounts were deleted. If the account is ever reinserted on your file, you'll have the paper trail and leverage you need to have them removed expeditiously. THIS is one reason why we do it all via mail and receive paper copies of all documentation from CRAs.
  2. Your posts say that you paid the OC (original creditor/healthcare provider) at the time of service. Then you provided them supporting documentation of said payment recently. The problem here seems to be that their billing system and record keeping is haphazard...or they simply had a random snafu. Either way, you are not responsible for their billing issues. Why on earth would you reward them by paying them a second time for the medical service...?? Protect yourself by keeping good records of this event, and go on about your merry way. Keep an eye on your reports, but there's no need to live in fear. You're well-armed and empowered. Carry on, soldier.

Thank you, I couldn't have said it better myself. :yahoo:
