Pulled My Credit Report; Call from Legal Outsourcing Followed

Hi Guys!

A little background on me:

 

I was incredibly dumb when I was 18 up til I was 20. I didn't pay bills and took out a couple payday loans. The payday loans went into default around the same time I moved from Texas to another state. Once I had moved I had received a call from some debt collection agency saying I was going to jail if I didn't pay because I committed a federal offense of going across state lines or something. So I started to pay them monthly. I never asked for verification(once again I was stupid) but thought I had paid them off. I never double check. I figure anyone after was a scam. I moved back to Texas a couple of years later. I do have some medical bills that went into default and I am currently rehabbing my last student loan.

 

About two weeks ago, I pulled my official credit report from Experian so I can start seeing the damage and repairing my credit.

 

 

This evening, I received a call from a Terry Anderson of Legal Outsourcing. He left a message on my phone saying:

 

 

This is Terry Anderson from Legal Outsourcing for [AfroMeatballs] with Social Security number ending in XXXX. I'm calling in regards to a formal complaint retain for processing involving check fraud on your behalf. Listed on the case file is the name responding that you need to appear for this. Federal law mandates that we attempt to notify you and obtain a voluntary statement from you in your defense. Again you either respond on the case or the case will move forward with or without your cooperation. Contact me today at 786-475-****. [AfroMeatballs] this is your official notification.

 

After he called my brother's phone and my brother passed the phone to me. I did not verify my identity only asked who he was. He stated his name was Terry Anderson from Legal Outsourcing. I clammed up and hung up.(like I have been doing for all these years. I am trying to correct this and get my credit back on track.) He left a message saying I was to call him back. I called him back but he has not answered the 5 attempts I have called. It goes straight to voice-mail with his name and saying I am to leave my case number and name/phone number.

 

There is nothing on my report from Legal Outsourcing. I can not find anything about this company or from the phone number except 2 comments on 1800 notes.I have no idea what he is talking about when he said I committed check fraud. I looked on the Texas State Attorney Office but nothing about this topic showed up.

 

I am trying to call him so I can an address to send a validation letter but he won't answer. He also did not provide a case number or any other information but he does have my Social Security number or at least the last 4 numbers.

 

What should I do now?

Step one, get off the phone. Do not conduct any business with anyone claiming to collect a debt by phone.

 

Step two, get it in writing. Send a debt validation letter (check the letter forum) for samples to this group and ask for validation that they have the right to collect the debt, own it, it's in the SOL etc. Make sure the letter includes that you can not take phone calls at ANY time and are to be reached by mail.

Wait until they send you something with an address and if they do report it on you CR then send something to that address. Make them do the work. They are not on your side so don't make any statements. They could ask you if it's a nice day where you are and then they have a recording of you saying "yes" (that is if it's a nice day) that they can fill in with any question they want to ask.

Google them and find an address. Either look up the phone number reverse directory style or google their name. There's got to be an address somewhere online for them

It's all a Geronimo scam. They tried to pull that on me a month or so ago. Same nonsense about a federal offense. What is a federal offense? Not paying an illegal payday loan? Never. And, I never had a payday loan. He also told me he was going to make my life miserable. The next time he called, I started laughing. He asked what is so funny? I told him what is funny is that you are full of crap. He actually laughed too.

 

Next time he calls tell him the call and phone number (although likely spoofed) have been recorded and are heading straight to your local police dep't and the FBI. Then tell him to get F'ed.

Thank You for the. Responses. I will wait til I receive some type of letter then proceed from there. I couldn't pull up any info about that company (which I am sure is probably fake) so I will wait.

 

Don't hold your breath. Scamsters like these don't send letters. They don't like to leave tracks. If the initial contacts and associated threats don't yield the coerced payments they move on to the next sucker.

IMHO, it sounds like he's using verbiage over the phone similar to what would be in a court summons trying to intimidate you into whatever he wants, but if there were in fact a case against you I believe they'd have to actually serve you papers, not try to do it over the phone.

IMHO, it sounds like he's using verbiage over the phone similar to what would be in a court summons trying to intimidate you into whatever he wants, but if there were in fact a case against you I believe they'd have to actually serve you papers, not try to do it over the phone.

I just noticed a bad assumption in this thread. This threat had nothing to do with you pulling your CR 2 weeks earlier.

 

It is pure coincidence. CRAs do not make this information available to anyone other than you.

Coincidence or not, seems AfroMeatballs is still getting some useful feedback on how to deal with these losers.

 

Yep. I particularly liked the idea of laughing at them if they call again.

Did they actually pull your CR?

 

I just look. No one has pulled my CR except my apartment when I applied a month ago, Sprint and Verizon(I need to get my own phone), and the place I got my car from.
