I have a debt by NCO listed on TU. It is from progressive insurance. It was placed on my report Jan of 2013. Of all my debts this is one that I had no clue why it was on there. I did have progressive many years ago but I don't recall ever owing them money. Anyways, In April I sent an unknown debt letter to them and they responded by saying they are no longer in charge of this debt and that all communications should be directed to Progressive. The next paragraph says that it will be removed from all CRAs. As of today it is still listed there. Originally I was just going to send this letter to TU with a dispute letter but if this is a violation by them still reporting then maybe I should pursue that.

The other thing that I am concerned about is that the account number that is listed on TU is no where to be found on this letter. They do have an account number but it is not the same one.

Suggestions on what I should do next?

Collection accounts that have be closed and sent back to the OC have to be deleted from your reports, no violation there

did you dispute this thru the CRA's - no right of private action under the FCRA until you do.

dispute it

How long ago did you receive the letter from NCO?

I received the letter in May of this year. I was waiting for it to disappear then I dropped the ball.

I have not disputed it through TU yet. When I dispute it should I send a copy of the letter from NCO as well. Like I mentioned I am concerned because the account number on the letter does not match what is on my credit report so if I send it in they may say it is for something else.
