AMEX Blue Sky - Targeted Offer, TU Pull Possible?

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post on creditboards, but I have been using the site for a little while in terms of the credit pulls database, as well as researching threads.

I'm having a little issue finding the information I need, and there are few, if any, datapoints in this regard:

I received a targeted offer in the mail based off my Transunion report only for the American Express Blue Sky. It's one of the relatively top offers, with 30,000 bonus points ($400 worth of travel), 17.24% APR, and 0% 15 month intro period on purchases. I was not planning on apping for a long time after getting 6 cards, since I wanted my credit score to continue to grow, but I don't have an AMEX in my arsenal, it was one of my future plans anyway, and why not start the goodies of future backdating early, eh?

I've checked all my reports, and AMEX seems to like softing TU and TU only...I've also received a few Green card offers based on my TU as well, but there was no sign up bonuses involved and I have no need for a charge card in this particular point in time anyways.

So my question is: Even though AMEX is an EX-puller majority of the time, and as long as my app requires only one hard pull, are they more likely to pull TU since they have been softing me there for offers, or will they pull EX anyways?

If it helps, I'm from NJ. The database, though helpful, still leaves me up in the air because there are no reports about previous softing on TU before receiving a single pull on TU.

This will help me decide when to app...if they will pull TU, I can app earlier and have a better profile (no inquiries) than if they pulled EX. Perfectionist me would like to wait for the balances on my report to be optimized anyways (1 card reporting low utilization while my other 5 cards are PIF to 0), and EX has some inquiries that will drop off completely or age to the 1 year mark the first week of August.

Thank you :)

IME, AMEX likes to pull EX exclusively and will request PIN/Unfreeze EX if frozen. If you decline their request, automatic denial. If EX is borderline, they will pull other reports.

I just recently picked up the Blue Sky while I had EX frozen and AMEX did pull TU for my approval without me requesting it. So it's possible.

@mbl280, did you have a targeted offer for Blue Sky, or did you just app online?

My reports aren't frozen, so I don't mind if they pull Experian. Just has more inquiries compared to my TU report.

Guess I'll sit on my hands and wait for some things to age on Experian, if I don't find much else about the TU pulls!

I just apped through their website. I didn't have a targeted offer although I would have loved to have the one you received!

Honestly, I wouldn't have the urge to app if it WASN'T for this offer! For no annual fee, it's too good to pass up!

Welp, to make it even more confusing, after reviewing my EQ report, a PRM JUST showed up from AMEX, dated from 6/27/13.

Why it's showing up a month later, I have no clue :/

Still no softs on EX...AMEX likes TU and EQ to send me offers, go figure :P

Now I gotta be alert about all THREE of my reports for this app...le sigh...this is like russian roulette.

Sorry, I meant that question for mbl280. I'm trying to figure out when Amex might pull TU. Often the choice of bureaus is state related.

Did you ever GP? I want the Costco Amex, applied online and they told me me to un freeze EX. The rep said they can't pull another bureau. I am going to wait a month and try in store.

Creditpulls has a few non EX entries. Nothing for Costco.

This has been my experience every time I've applied for an Amex.

Chase, too, FWIW. :)

I have been thinking about this since learning about Amex backdating and how it helps AAofA.

I have really two thoughts. One is I'm surprised that AMEX isn't pressured not to backdate new accounts since the rules say if you report (you don't have to report), you have to report accurately. I'm glad they do it, but they are kind of fudging there.

But what I really don't get is why some of their competitors don't do the same thing. That would be a huge benefit to members and would draw lots of new business and wouldn't cost a dime.

I am just surprised that AMEX seems to have a lock on this perk and is able to gain a competitive advantage over their peers.

Just called to get paid copies mailed. The other two went fine, asked for payment and gave confirmation number. Trans Union just said it was "processed" and I'll get it in bla bla business days. I got free reports on 12/25, are they just sending me that? I tried to call to talk to a rep, but not open again till 8:30 monday.

Happy New Year's to all my fellow CBers:

Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. I had a quick question, I have read threads on D* and in everything I got a little confused. With regards to an AU card, IF the AU had their OWN AMEX in say 1993 would they be able to use that as a D* date if added on as an AU? I know that it is said AU D* is dead, however, I kinda got turned around in my readings, I think that it is dead with regards to the MAIN CC Acct Holder having D* and the AU trying to get the SAME D* that really wasn't theirs. I am assuming that if the AU had a potential D* of 1993, that AMEX would honor it regardless of the date on the new acct, am I completely off here?

Also, if AMEX did allow it, what might the impact be on the AU's AAOA. would it truly effect it? Or since it's only an AU card does it factor differently?

As always, thanks for all your help and guidance, I have some success stories to share as soon as I get caught up with school.

This is an academic question for me since I burned AMEX in my BK 7. That said, are people gaming carefully managing their AAOA by periodically opening and closing AMEX cards? Since you get D* for each AMEX card (open or closed), wouldn't it make sense to have as many of these reporting as possible -- open or closed? Obviously you don't want to pay a bunch of fees, but couldn't you churn the no AF products?

Maybe this has been addressed before but I have been thinking about it. If people open and close various CC accounts regularly to churn bonus miles, why not churn Amices to heavily impact your AAofA?
