Brief B* Summary

Recommended Posts

(If you don't know what B* means start here)

Experian aka EX:

  • Only time can remove inquiries.

Equifax aka EQ:

From the four options above you need a minimum combination of any three to achieve B* (all four services can be used for faster B*). The magic number of soft pulls is 85. Odds are your softs will get chopped every month--aka C*. Therefore, you must be diligent and pull EVERYDAY to achieve maximum B* in each cycle, especially if using only three services (with the number "85" in mind do the math).

TransUnion aka TU:

  • Smart Credit Premium aka SCP. You can pull daily anytime after 12:00am Pacific Time $9.95/mo. via Tim Conway Jr. discount link

You only need this one service for TU. The magic number of soft pulls is ~66.

Things to note:

  • Mortgage inquiries are stickies so they are not going anywhere
  • If you achieve B* then it stops when there is no C* that means you are B*ing softs that are older than your hard inqs. Just keep at it
  • Some of the services listed above have family plans that can save $$$ on spousal B*
  • Equifax Complete is the only service that shows your EQ soft pulls
  • For TU, the backdoor shows softs. DO NOT use this backdoor very often if you want to keep it unlocked

The questions and posts will still come.

Great summary though!

What is B*?

What does "start here" mean?

:P

Good summary, melikey... :)

Yes, HRGUY, questions will come. But not because MELIKEY did not do a great job of explaining.

So here goes...

In most of the definitive posts that are written by those I would consider experts, it is a clear point that mortgage inquiries CAN NOT be B*

Yet almost every time, someone will post a rebuttal that they absolutely CAN and DO get B*

So perhaps someone can clarify once and for all:

Are mortgage inquiries stickies, or not?

Thanks!

I have not seen it happen on EQ.

Seems the rebuttals are for TU.

I've never bumped any. You can count your softs on EQ Complete and see if the mortgage inqs vanish when they are supposed to. Then you know for sure. If they do go bye bye consider it a pleasant surprise! However, go into B* assuming that they WILL NOT go away... and don't waste much $$ trying. IMO

If you had caught it in time, it was 15.95, now it is 16.95.

You must not have used the links in that thread?

Anyhow, it may be worth a call - they may give you the 15.95 plan since if it was in effect at the time of sign-up.

I just added EC. I cannot find my softs. Where are they? I just see the hards listed.

They are listed just under the hards.

More tidbits to add:

A casino marker inquiry from Central Credit is sticky and cannot be B* (at least from Equifax).

I've also heard that the use of EC will lead to C* if you are not already subject to C*.

The first day's tri-pull after signup never shows the hards, but they DO show after the next update. :)

There might be a C* starting tomorrow...

I don't think you're getting C* yet. If you were all but a couple of the pulls for your Truecredit and Credit Expert would start around 05/20 something. Now that you've added EC you'll probably make the C* list but it's no biggie. Just be diligent about pulling daily.
