So my TU credit score is 684. My CC utilization is 10%. I have car payment that has always been on time (2.5 years). I have zero negative items. Just 2 hard inquires and I just got denied a Citibank card. I also asked my Capital One card that I got a long time ago (but only $500 limit) for an increase because I could really use some more credit right now since I"m getting married in a few months.

My credit score used to be bad but I've done everything I can over the last few years to make it better. i finally thought a 684 would be good enough.

Also I make over $100k and only owe $9k in student loans. Any thoughts on why I'm being denied? I'm so frustrated right now. Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated.

Capital One is not known for giving CLI's on the builder cards. Some people have had success dealing with the executive office, but I have no experience with that.

Which Citi card did you apply for? They can be fickle when first building a relationship.

Thank you for the response. I applied for the Citi Simplicity card because CreditKarma recommended that one for me. I do see that the average for that card is 706 but a low of 650. Also I've had this Capital One card for over 5 years and never missed or late. I called them and asked for an increase. No explanation on why I was denied. Same with Citi.

I should point out that in Citi's eyes, installment loans don't really mean anything. They're one of the big lenders and one card with a $500 limit may not be enough unsecured credit for them to take a chance on you. Depending on product you applied for of course.

Is that a real FICO? Have you wronged Citi in the past? Do u have a thin file?

You may want to try a secured card

It's the Transunion score Credit Karma gives. And you know I did have a charge off with Citibank about 10 years ago. I was dumb and still in college. You think they could have put me on some type of black list with them? But why would I get denied with Capital One?

I cannot speak to the Citi issue, but will absolutely agree that I have had no success with CLI's with CapOne. Started at $300, and stayed there.

You have good credit and they denied you for increases?

The charge off's what got you, Citi maintains their own records so even though it's 10 years old, you're probably blacklisted.

Capitol One are notorious for that, I wouldn't put any more worry into them; just keep up your good history.

Edit: The big banks that you should generally build history with are Barclays, Citi, Chase, Amex and Discover (IMO). I'd think a Chase Freedom would be worth trying for.

Credit Karma's score is a FAKO and not to be trusted

Sorry I'm new to these forums. Is FAKO tongue and cheek for Fake FICO? Any suggestions on what I should do or if you think my FICO is actually much lower than 684?

Try Barclays (maybe their Priceline 2% card).

If denied, or if you get the "7-10 day" message, call and ask for reconsideration.

You should also apply for a Walmart card (immediately AFTER Barclays). It will give you a true FICO score monthly and help you build credit.

The Credit Karma score is for entertainment purposes only; ignore it.

Good luck! :)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback. Should I wait now because I can't trust CreditKarma? Also I got denied with Citi so I'm worried that applying for more will give me more hard inquiries (lowering my score even more).

May be higher, too. Make sure to pay your CC balance to $1 right before the statement cuts, give it a few days and try again. Something's repressing your score if you've had the one card for 5 years, my guess would be a high reported utilization on the one card.

I was recently approved for the barclay rewards matercard. My credit karma score is 665 but in my approval letter they listed my score as 720, and myfico.com has it at 724 (though they use an outdated scoring model). I agree that barclays would be worth a shot.

All, I feel a lot better. Really... your responses are much appreciated. If I could just get a couple more opinions on if I need to be worried about applying for another card now. I'm worried that i will get hit with too many inquiries. I had 2 before I applied to Citibank and now I should have 3. Should I wait? Should I try Barclay now?

Amen to that. My CK is 593 and my actual TU FICO is 667.

As for Citi they are officially off my list as I found what they did to me recently unconscionable. I applied and was denied but told on recon that if I submitted a correct CR within 30 days they would reconsider. I got five more things off that were negative but not mine and resubmitted. They did ANOTHER hard pull and still denied for the exact same reasons as the first time.

They didn't have to do another hard pull and hand I known it was a waste of time would not have spent the HP. Walk away there are better CCs out there.

I would for SURE consider Barclays if you're going to app for anything right now. Especially if you think TU is your best report as they exclusively pull TU. As suggested above IF you do get denied call for recon.

YMMV but I was approved for the Barclays Apple visa with likely a worse credit report.

You may have success trying Cap One executive offices. Send an email to richard.fairbank@capitalone.com. I had my card for 5 yrs as well and just recently got myself and hubby CLI's on 3 of our cards. Here's the link to the thread http://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=500738&page=1
