Hi Everyone...

Was looking for a quick answer...

I just got approved for a Walmart store card for $700. Called UW to see if they would upgrade me to Discover and was transferred to Customer Service. Was told that I would have to reapply for Discover...will this result in another hard inq or can they use the same inq they already pulled?

After researching the boards it looks like the regular store card will eventually upgrade to Discover. Should I go for it now or just wait it out?

On my report, I have 3 CO, 2 paid, 1 unpaid.

Thanks!

With GECRB Walmart they would first try to qualify you for the WM Discover then the store card. I would not immediately try another app, GECRB would most likely pull another hard inquiry and then end up denying the card. I would call the UW and attempt to get a better CL on that card though and wait for them to convert.

Adding: Congrats on the approval!

Can I ask where you read about people being upgraded to discover? I remember this happening a while back when the new cards were issued, but I don't see a pattern of it happening periodically. My TU score is in the 800s, and all I ever got was CLIs when I asked for them online

You might be right. I was looking at the CreditPulls for Walmart and noticed that a few people said that were upgraded or automatically upgraded...most recent one was last year - so they may not do it anymore.

Others have said that they re-applied for Discover after having the Walmart card for a little while and they were approved..so maybe that's something you could do.

How were you able to ask for the credit increases online - is this what some people have been calling the "luv button" (I have been really wondering about this)?

Yeah, in Account Services there was a Line Increase Request. That's what people call the love button on any online request option for any card. I think someone told me that it's not working anymore. Last time I checked it worked, but I haven't done it for a while.

LOL, no it still works, its just WAY better to call UW number directly and ask for CLI.

My 2 cents...

They will NEVER upgrade you just by calling in and asking to be upgraded to a Discover Wal-Mart.

You get upgraded when they periodically pull Softs to your report and when your scores/reports are good enough then they will offer it to you. You have so long to upgrade then it goes away. Will come back again if you still have good scores when they do another Soft on your report. Then they'll just offer you an upgrade again. But it's only after Wal-Mart does a soft every so often.

Applying for a Discover Wal-Mart while already having a Wal-Mart card will result in 2 things. One, you'll get another Hard inq, and 2, you'll be declined because you already have a Wal-Mart card.

Doesn't matter that the CSR tells you to re-apply, they are WRONG. They told me the same thing and I reapplied and got the HARD inq plus the reason for being declined was that I already had a Wal-Mart credit card account.

There's no big mystique of a Wal-Mart Discover. Just keep your Wal-Mart card, call UW's # and get it in the 5 Digits. It's really quite easy.

If your scores are in the 800's and you DIDN'T get the WM Discover when applying then there is something on your credit report that they obviously don't like. Might me short Credit history or any number of things but they look at things besides a SCORE.

I started off with a $500 dollar WM card. Every 4 months hit the luv button and went from $500-$750-$1,200-$2,100 and then I smartened up and called the UW magic #. I asked for $7,000 CL and was instantly approved after they looked at my reports which took just a minute. It was also a SOFT which was nice but I would have gladly taken a Hard for a $5 Thousand increase.

In 2 more months I'm calling again and asking for $15,000 :)

I'm sure there are anomalies and people who have different experiences with the Wal-Mart card so I can't speak for them. But what I've told you is all fairly recent. Most the time the Customer Service reps don't know a thing about what is going on with their cards. FWIW I wouldn't waste another Hard only to be declined. Just get your CL up every 4 months and you'll eventually be offered the WM Discover.

Another way you possibly could get the WM Discover card is by CANCELING your Wal-Mart card. Then reapplying about a week later. But, it would really suck if all they offered you again was the Wal-Mart card, LOL.

Good Luck

Yep, me. My experiences have been almost completely different from above ^.

One thing I definitely agree on though is that there is NOTHING special about the Disco version of WM card. :good:

Besides the extremely crappy rewards and more universal acceptance, there's really no reason to get the Discover over the store card. And if you're able to qualify for the Walmart Discover, chances are you're able to qualify for a straight 1% Visa/MC anyway, so the rewards and acceptance aren't anything special. You still get the FICO with both of them, which is the important part.

Also, I don't ever recall hearing GECRB close a card due to inactivity, so even if you don't go to Walmart/Sams often it shouldn't be a problem. My father has a JC Penney card from 1986 or something like that, I don't even think he has the card still but it's still reporting open on his reports. YMMV, as always.

Thanks for sharing this info. I guess there are no advantages in getting the Discover WM card.

There have been plenty of reports of GECRB closures for lack of activity. As with any other CC, you should keep active. Plus FICO doesn't seem to be fond of dormant accounts either.
