Been contemplating next steps for getting some new lines opened, and thought I'd try the shopping cart trick at Victoria's Secret. Figured it couldn't hurt anything. Sure enough, I was pre-approved for $500. Nice, right? Apparently not. I clicked 'get started' and entered my birth date and the last four of my ssn. Then boom, you'll get a letter within 10 days. What have I done? Are they now going to hard pull? Did I just waste an EX inquiry for that?

Anyone seen this? Any hope here?

Thanks

I think there is mention of this on the WFNNB thread. I dont' know if it results in a hard pull or not. I *think* you have to actually do the app to get the hard inq though. FX'd for you that it isn't a hard pull!

Well, I don't know if this would be considered a glitch or not, but I'm thinking it could have been a problem with my address. During the birthday/last four of ssn confirmation part, my address was displayed without my apartment number. Not sure if that matters. And I suppose it would prompt them to do a hard pull to verify that. But hopefully that would require the full app, not just what I did.

I refreshed my USAA monitoring and nothing showed up, but that was within 5-10 minutes of the incident.

Ugh!

Oh, I'm sorry I'm been a bit spacey today...I thought there was another person who had the same problem...I don't even know how I came up with the scenerio. At any rate, I hope it works out for you. FWIW I got approved on soft pull for VS when my score was still below 600. I had 2 defaulted student loans, 2 CO's and 2 collections at the time. They seem to be pretty forgiving. Maybe call them and ask if there was a problem with your transaction or if you need to verify identity?

In response to the OP, same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I read the WFNNB thread and what I got from it was that if the address on the credit report that's pulled does not match exactly, then the 7-10 day message shows up. I've been waiting for something in the mail - nothing yet though.

Anyone got a phone number to call to check on it?

I think you would need to call the CS for the particular card. I don't think they are like GE backed cards (though I could be wrong), I believe each card has its own customer service department or credit services department. If you go to the comenity website for the company in question you should be able to find a toll free number.

I did indeed call that number just a short while after this happened. The person on the phone tried to be helpful. I gave her my ssn and she looked me up but couldn't find anything at that time. I'm going to see if they are open today...

Hmm...perhaps if you call again and you get the same reply try the VS site again to see if you get the popup again...if you do use the EXACT information from your Experian file. When I put in my name I initially used the short version that I am know as rather than my full name. When I tried again I used my full legal name (ugh) and put in Lane instead of Ln for my physical address that's when it worked for me. That could have all been coincidence though.

Okay, here's the update. This person told me that she could not check information regarding applications; she only has access to existing accounts. She even checked with a supervisor to make sure. When she came back on the line she told me that the message I received (7-10 days) does in fact almost always mean that information needs to be verified, and that a hard pull should not be expected. I asked how info is verified and she said they usually just check with USPS. Who would've thought.

So, thanks to you all and Anna, the rep I just spoke with, I'm breathing a little easier. I'll update with the verdict when I get the mail.

tee2503 - It seems from my conversation just now that you would be able to get some info by calling that number. She certainly gave me the impression that your account would have been created by now. Good luck!

Thanks all!

Update - the letter came today and the reason was the name, address, or Social Security Number was different from information used in the original pre-approved credit offer, we are unable to complete the processing of your response and are unwilling to extend credit to you at this time.

Called CS number and got no real help basically contact credit bureau to update address and then reapply. Experian is showing my current address - but other credit has different addresses.

When i got the pop up i was excited and hoping to get this card through soft pull. Not sure what to do next?

You know, I think I'd do what EnC_Plus3 said just above. If this isn't costing hard inquiries then what's the harm in trying the shopping cart trick again and just using that alternate info? Then again, as the OP, I surely don't know how it will work. But I will post back to this thread when I get a letter from them.

I'm all but certain VS soft pulled my Ex file, not sure if they are like other creditors and jump from file to file randomly, by state, by time of the day :P , or some other unknown variable....but if you decide to try again I'd say use the info in your Ex file as that seems to be Comenity's most common file of choice. I know they also use EQ, not sure about TU though. Good luck to both of you.

Got my letter. Exactly the same as tee2503 above in post #15. I checked my file and noticed two little discrepancies (but no hard pull!). I went ahead and added my middle initial to the billing info that VS keeps, as well as moved my apartment number to the main line right after the street address. I can't imagine that those things would have been a big enough deal to kick out a denial, but on the off chance that I can get another pop-up approval sometime, then what the heck.

Another update. I decided to try again since I wanted the VS card. I got the pop up and I entered the previous address & name spelling exactly as listed on Experian. It went thru and I was able to charge the purchase to the card.
