I applied for Alliant CU and received a hard inquiry alert from creditscore.com :( is this normal?

Sadly, yes. Many CUs, including Alliant, do a hard pull for membership. Some will use that pull to also consider you for credit products, others require yet another hard pull for credit... Sometimes from a different bureau. Ask lots of questions and make sure you know what you are getting into before joining.
