Hello,

I ran my Equifax report yesterday (in preparation for a per-approval for my first home loan). To my dismay I have one negative mark due to a late payment 30 days past due from my CapOne/ Best Buy CC.

1) I called Best Buy but they said they can't correct it on their end. I should just dispute with the Credit agencies.

2) I use credit Karma regularly and I was shocked at how much lower my score was on Experian (credit Karma 726, Experian with Negative Mark 628)!

What can I do to ensure CapOne corrects its mistake? Should I wait on getting my pre-approval until the dispute is resolved? Why is there such a huge difference in my scores?

Thanks! I appreciate all the insight.

Check your bank records. If they messed up and are reporting you as paying late, they CAN fix it. Call HSBC/Cap1 not a Best Buy store.

Credit Karma uses a FAKO score based on their own data and model. It is pointless to compare that score to your Experian score. That is why you have a huge discrepancy.

After checking your banking records (you should have these), call CRAP1 and tell them that you can fax them proof that you made your payment on time. If they still cannot help you, dispute with the CRA's.

Do you know the contact information of Capital One's Executive Offices? They may veyr well be inclined to help you in this situation, especially in light of buying your first home (congrats btw!)

If you know the e-mail, you should shoot them an e-mail. If not.. I suppose I could type it in a search-engine defeating format for you, so that you could e-mail them?

When you look back at the database here, you will find that Cap 1 was doing some goodwill, such as removing late payments back in 2006-2008; however, recently, it seems that they are more inclined to doing Credit Line Increases, APR reductions, waiving annual fees, etc. thru the Executive Offices. The only other exception that I saw with this was with military personal that was deployed where they reversed reporting late payments due to the deployment act. Apparently, there was a class action against Cap1 on this.

From my own experience, I had an account with them that was 5 years old with one 30 day, and they refused to remove it. I have gone thru many routes to get this off my reports; including, contacting Management within, Goodwill and disputing the tradeline thru my credit reports. That being said, it never hurts to ask for help from them-however, just know what you're up against with them. If there's no error on their part, they will take a very hard line on it. In the meantime, keep us to date on your luck with them. Best of luck.
