USAA Offering EMV Chip and PIN

‎01-31-2013 02:05 PM

I just got off the phone with USAA. They're converting my USAA Platinum MasterCard to a Chip and PIN card (actual Chip and PIN, mind you, with an... actual PIN). I didn't really get any details on whether it was available for Visa or Amex cards (likely not?), but I was told

a) it will only come in the black design

b ) it will have a PIN

c) I get one PIN for my account, including AUs/additional cards

d) I can't change the PIN myself

e) card number/rates/rewards will not change

The CSR was not aware of Chip/Sig (she confused it with Visa Signature, which she said "we're beginning to offer to qualified accounts"). I commented that perhaps it was because a large part of their customer base is deployed in Europe and needs maximum compatibility - she agreed this makes sense.

Woo! Just got off the phone with USAA. Upgraded my Platinum rateAdvantage Mastercard!

(I was the CSR's first request for chip&PIN)

Now to call and harass all my other card issuers.

Oh, also conveniently confirmed my USAA card is set to auto-CLI at regular intervals! \o/

Be careful what you wish for. Many CB members have a large amount of credit cards. When chip and PIN comes to the US, how will we remember all those PINs? Edited by Burgerwars

So, called AMEX. My BCP is being re-issued with a chip&PIN.

I didn't have my Zync onhand, so couldn't do that one.

Called NFCU - they have no EMV capabilities at this time.

Called Chase - the CSR said he will ask about it, since we both know about chip&sig (which is already on my Select card), but he didn't realize any major issuer had taken the plunge on EMV. Aside from that, they've been looking at it, with possibly a 2015 roadmap.

Called Wells Fargo - they said not only no, but HELL NO. They trialed it before, and all the chip&PIN transactions processed as cash advances, thus costing the customer(s) more money.

Called Discover - they're looking at it, but no roadmap known to the peons at this time.

Let us know if it shows up with a chip.

Users on another forum report asking for one earlier this week and being told that a replacement was being sent out. Once it showed up, no chip! They called Amex to ask what's up, and the CSR said they're only issuing them for Platinum and Cent. Apparently, the previous CSR had signed them up to have EMV as the "preference" for future replacements once it is released but that they actually weren't available yet. I guess they're trying out the chips on just a few cards first to try to "work out the kinks"

Just make it the last 4 digits of your card number! Or the last four of your SSN. :good:

I just got off the phone for requesting new Chip and PIN card. Here is some info:

It is a new thing even the CSR haven't seen one. The Chip and PIN card comes in one design. It is the Black Card. You cannot keep the design you currently have. The PIN and card will come separately within 10 days. You will memorize the PIN and they won't able to change it. The Chip and PIN only available to Mastercard only (NOT Amex and Visa). It doesn't change the current term of the card and rewards program of the card. You need to destroy your current card when you receive your new card.

It took only 5 to 10 mins. to change it.

Ron.

Here is the card looks like:

That particular card doesn't look to be available for limited members, like me. I don't plan on applying for a USAA card until sometime next year. Maybe by that time other cards will be chipped. Edited by Burgerwars

What is your score?

Ron.

Around 620. Might go up soon as I'm finishing up rehabilitation on a student loan. DTI is pretty high, too, because of student loans. From the credit pulls, I don't feel too confident but may try anyways since I have very few hard pulls on my credit right now.

My understanding is that PIN and chip is availble on any mastercard, which they do offer mastercards to limited members.

It is not available on my Affinity Mastercard. I also offered to do a product change. They said I would have to apply for a new World M/C and then ask for the Chip and Pin to be issued from that.

So it has to be a world master card?? Uuughh... I keep trying to like USAA, but I'm starting to think they aren't the right bank for me :(
