Of the ones I have?

Citi Forward

PenFed Platinum Rewards

...though it's a tough call between PenFed & AmEx BCP (which will likely be a BCE soon, so I'm considering it that way). I'd like the diversity of having two networks, along with AmEx's protection and sync offers. I only carry those 3 cards with me regularly.

I only keep Discover Card in my wallet. They're the only company i've ever dealt with that had decent customer support, didn't rate jack me on a whim, worked with me through some tough times and never gave me a single issue.

Amex can burn in hell, Bank of America is the devil, Chase is like committing yourself to servitude and i've had nothing but poor customer service from Citi as well.

Just my 2 cents

This is such an arbitrary question that everyone is going to answer differently, and all answers will be bounded by the limits of what the person answering can or has achieved in their own credit profile. I would cary a Centurion and a Visa Siggy... but I can't do that because I don't have a Centurion. Doh. wink.gif

All that aside, I personally cary An Amex charge and an Amex revolver, a Visa points card, and a Discover product.

My current thinking is that a mix of charge and rewards revolvers is best... but it really boils down to what you do in your own life. Someone who flies incessantly might want a points card, but I minimize their use because I don't get much mileage from them. What cards are 'right' is a really personal and idiosyncratic characteristic.

Are 5 credit cards too many to carry at all times? What about a debit card?

Depends on where you live. If the crime rate's pretty high, then two credit cards and one ATM only card is probably the right answer.

Just got to judge your local risk and work from there. Cancelling a couple cards and not having your bank account hit with debit transactions is worth going light where I live.

Edit: And for the way my household is and my spend, a Penfed Platinum Rewards with a Citi Forward would meet all my day-to-day needs.

Credit cards offer protection from thieves. Debit cards do as well, but you will be left without any cash until the investigation is complete. So the answer is, don't care a debit card tied to a large account of money. :D

Get a bigger wallet

I carry around 4 cards that I regularly use, so I'll have to agree with BW's comment here.

What 4 cards would you have?

My current 4 cards that get the most use:

Citi Forward

Sallie Mae 5% Cash Back Visa

Chase Freedom

(Varies)

The last spot varies depending on my normal "base rewards" card. Right now that spot is being filled by my Citi Thank You Preferred Mastercard since I'm working up to my $200 after $700 spend signing bonus. Usually, it's my Household Bank 2% Platinum Mastercard. If Capital One decides to axe that card's rewards program, I'll put my AmEx Blue Sky in that spot.

My personal cards are only 3:

Capital One $500 CL

Orchard Bank $300 CL

BBRZ MC $300 CL

I'm an AU on DW cards which are:

AMEX ZYNC $3000 CL

BOFA MC $700 CL

Chase Freedom $500 CL

Capital One $500 CL

Kay Jewelers $1000 CL

She was JUST approved today for BOFA ASDA MC $2500 CL

Now to answer the OP question, I carry:

AMEX ZYNC (Use it to pay household bills, car loan and everything that will be paid by the end of the month)

BOFA MC (Use it for anything that I think MIGHT wait till the next billing cycle to be paid.)

and since I cannot add DW as AU on my BBRW MC I carry that one for the purchases I don't want DW to know about ;)

BTW DW carries them all but only uses:

AMEX ZYNC (Rarely uses it tho)

Chase Freedom (Uses it for everyday stuff like coffee and small daily purchases.)

I hope that the reason you are making charges you don't want DW to know about is that they are surprises for her.

Hey, its a Best Buy card, so needless to say I buy my "toys" with that card and no one has to know! LOL

Just last week I bought two hard drives and a 700w Inverter for my car.

She hates that I buy so many (as she puts it) "gadgets".

Why would you choose Penfed over BCP? Is your gas bill > your grocery bill? Just curious.

They're about even, but I don't think I'm going to re-up the BCP as such and will downgrade it to BCE, making them = grocery stores. As a single dude, I don't think I spend enough on groceries to outweigh the $75AF. I guess with my Sears & Nordstrom spending it's close, but eh. I was considering the BCP as BCE, as I noted.

That and I recently noticed that Target = grocery store on PenFed.
