My late grandfather was retired from the department of defense. He worked on various bases. Retired after a long career, then did contract work for them. Phone rep said I was I ineligible because he is deceased. I recall reading about others getting in under their late grandfathers. Should I try again another day or am I SOL? Thx!

Ok so apparently it is a game of phone rep roulette. I called back and got a rep who was very eager to open an account for me. When I asked her if I was eligible she replied with "so, you'd like to open up an account today? ".

However, there is still some bad news as I was not auto approved. I need to call back or something. I'm guessing it is due to my craptastic credit (bk, foreclosure, blah, blah) or maybe because I answered one of my personal identification questions wrong. I was asked ow many people n the house and unless they are going off 2011 taxes there's no way they'd know about my infant. So I hope my denial is due to the latter and can be addressed. I'm really going to need NFCU to get my credit back into shape.

I had the "How many people in household" question recently on an ID verification and the correct answer was the number of people which included my 5 week old son. I think they go by SSN#'s. He already has a SS card.

Didn't realize that your no longer related to someone who is deceased. Okay Sorry but I had to.

Seriously though that is interesting because when I joined my father who is deceased was how they let me in, he was a USA Fed Member through being DoD and then got merged into NFCU. I called up told them my father was a member when he was alive, gave his social, name, dob she found his closed accounts and started to set me up.

I also got the someone will call you which was super disappointing. 24 hours later someone from their security department called me and did the whole we will require additional identifcation (I offered my DL and SS card, he said that would be perfect and instructed me to fax them, mail them or take them to a local branch.) and then I opened my big mouth and asked if they where questioning my eligibility and he very quickly said "No, I see right here your information is linked in our system with your late father, sorry for his passing.". I faxed the stuff in, and about 10 days later I started getting stuff from them in the mail, ATM card, Pin Number, etc So I called asked if I was approved and such, the really nice CSR said yes and then started trying to get me applying for credit products... which obviously I already knew I wannted to do. So we talked, I apped, got approved had to send paystubs for navCheck. Everything has been great.

I'm no authority on the matter, so OP should definitely try to get a solid answer.

However, the deceased can't open new bank accounts. In order for a family member to be eligible, the other person must be at least eligible (some argue they have to join, many have had success otherwise, but that's a difference issue). You can't be eligible if you are deceased, right? :dntknw:

Fair enough... It did not occur to me that the original person who was eligible was not a member during their life. I don't know why I just assumed it was obvious that they only make you eligible if they exercised their eligibility while living. But as you pointed out people have found their way around that in some cases..

Though if the family member simply needs to be eligible and isn't required to open an account or sign anything just exist and at some point met the requirements why does it mater if they are deceased?

I know I know semantics on the interwebs... and none of it matters all that matters is what NFCU decides.

Yeah, I don't know. I wish they would clarify eligibility in some of these questionable scenarios.

it seems most often grey area = no. Though I suppose if they opened up eligibility to everyone related to anyone ever in the military they might as well just say its open.. heh So i can understand and respect their wanting to keep it semi exclusive..

I mean they do say "Once your family members have joined, they can extend the membership opportunity to their family members, too." Which does basically say family only makes you eligible if they are a member.

However it seems like maybe the clarification needs to happen with their CSR's answering the phone and employees in the branches.

If you can find his paperwork, I think others have gotten in through a deceased relative...I would call back and try your luck with a different rep.

Be careful trying to get in with this route. I was kicked out after using my deceased father, which was initially said to be okay via the phone rep. During a more detailed check, it was determined I was in fact NOT eligible, and they yanked all my accounts and kicked me to the curb. It was quite the nightmare. Its worth the extra effort to be 100% certain you can get in, before you get into this kind of a bind.

The problem has never been that eligibility is ambiguous. It is actually quite clear. The problem has always been, that a long time ago, people who were not eligible, started trying to weasel their way in to NFCU. Some were successful, some were not. Those who were, decided to boast about it, and the madness began, and escalated to the point where people are either misinformed about eligibility, or don't care and choose to "roll the dice" Now granted, I blame the CSRs' for a lot of this. Instead of immediately denying ineligible apps, they allow them to go forward and let someone else deal with it. Either out of laziness, trying to get credit for a new account, or are just misinformed themselves. OP you are not eligible! And worse than that, I think you already knew that. Considering you admitted that you kept calling until someone said yes. "Playing Telephone Roulette", I think you put it. Why stop with just your grandfather being retired DOD? Why not tell them your Great Great Great Great Grandfather served in the Continental Congress. Sorry for the rant. But is quite simple. Membership eligibility is spelled out on the Website as well as in their printed literature. So if you were truly eligible you could either walk in to a branch, or join online. Or if that didn't work, you could come up with a good story and call the 800#

https://www.navyfede...-checklist.php#

If you hover on "details" on the last question,

This includes those whose family members are currently a member of Navy Federal or eligible for membership.

Our definition of Family Member includes grandparent, parent, spouse, sibling, children (adopted, foster, and step), grandchildren, and household members.*

*Household members who are eligible through existing members MUST reside at the same address and make an economic contribution to the financial stability of the household of the existing member.

This statement says NOTHING for the deceased family member. It DOES say that you must reside at the same address AND "make an economic contribution to the financial stability of the household of the existing member." << I would think those last two words could definitely be clarified!

IE: Household members who are eligible through existing members MUST reside at the same address and make an economic contribution to the financial stability of the household of the current or eligible member.

BUT, that's not what it says. Still not sure if you are eligible? Use our Membership Eligibility Wizard or call us at 1-888-842-6328, then press *31.

I was approved through my late stepfather who was retired Navy and National Guard. He was not a member. Our resident NFCU expert told me I was indeed eligible through my deceased stepfather, and he didn't have to be a member, just "eligible for membership" while alive. They didn't ask for any paperwork. If they do, my mom (who has not remarried) has his DD-214 at the ready. If by chance they later decide I'm not eligible, then so be it.

I think a lot of the confusion here often stems from "retired vs. discharged." That's the impression I get from reading the posts, anyway. Retired is a yes, discharged is a no.

This has been discussed before? :swoon:

Yes I know it's been discussed before!! I was just trying to summarize what it often comes down to in the end, when people are confused about eligibility... most people go in with the idea that all military service automatically qualifies their family member. Which would make sense, but it's not actually true. So they need to find out first how their family member left the service.

Oh, just HUSH, you. aggressive.gif

Seriously?

The eligibility rules on the website DO NOT address deceased family members. If my grandfather was still alive then according to the rules I could be a member EVEN without him joining NFCU. Well he's not alive, so....?

What's the BFD? It's not like I'm trying to pull a fast one on NFCU. I'm not making anything up. And it's not my fault that different CSRs seem to follow different sets of rules, or are misinformed.

I don't know what your specific issue is, but I'm guessing that you are pissed off because you can't get in or you are one of those types who wants to close the gates after you get in. Either way you are being a jerk.

You are 100% correct, and I mentioned EXACTLY this situation to an account specialist today while at my branch. She confidently explained to me that while this (and some other grey area's also) is NOT mentioned, it IS a valid way in, providing that they were IMMEDIATE FAMILY (brother, sister, mother, father, gma, gpa - NOT cousin, aunt, uncle, ect.), AND that they would have been a qualified member on their own. It does not matter if they had ever opened an account before death or not.

OP, if it hasn't already been sorted out by now, if at all possible GO to a branch and speak with an account specialist or their manager.

:offtopic: Did you know that because they are Homeland Security and NOT DoD, our Coast Guard members and retirees ARE NOT ELIGIBLE (unless currently assigned to a DoD base)???

REALLY NFCU??? <_<

UPDATE!

Got a call today from NFCU telling me I'm IN! It is kind of strange because last week they told me I would need to call back in a few days and I didn't as I figured I'd wait until I had more info on my grandfather's DoD career. I'm still going to gather what info I can when my mother visits my grandmother (widow of said grandfather) in a few weeks, just in case they do a review on me down the road. Anyone know what specific info I need? His SS#, or special military number? I'm guessing there should be some sort of identifying number on his pension paperwork.

Really, based on WHAT? If I remember correctly, YOUR situation was much more so BS based on so-called "sister" (unrelated) who may or may not have ever even lived with you.

You should check yourself before Karma wrecks you.
