Bob is kind of aggressive. I would bite my tongue, wait and hope I get to keep the 1993 dates. After a few months, call and ask for a replacement card - misplaced, damaged, whatever - don't say stolen. Just do one card - see what date is on the replacement card.

Tricky Mom. ;)

What about transferring that 1993 backdating to a personal card? I called customer service a little while ago (The SPG Amex phone number) and asked about using the backdating on a personal card and she said no problem. She just said to remind the application taker about it and it should be fine.

My next curiosity would be to call one of the other two cards that have 2012 stamped on the card and ask about backdating and casually ask what date they are showing IN THE SYSTEM. Someone on another MB said that once it's on your account homepage, it's official for all cards regardless of what's on the card itself. I hope that's true because my account home page says 1993.

Moreover, I read at myfico that if you are in my position (all biz cards, no personal), the first personal card will show the current year as the start date of the account and that any additional cards will honor the older backdate of the other cards. Anyone have experience with this as well?

Sorry to be such a pest, BTW. I actually have very good scores in the upper 700s but my Average Age of Accounts is on the weaker side....and my average age of OPEN accounts is really weak since I just fixed my credit last year. Being able to slap a personal card (or two) from Amex with 1993 dating on my credit report would really make my tradeline much older, more robust and resistant to big drops in AAOA from new credit accounts.

My wife has over 40 accounts on her report...the older ones going back to the 1990s. When she gets a new card or loan, her scores doesn't move very much and recovers very quickly.

The Business AmExes are not reporting to your personal reports any way.

If you want the benefit of D*,

you'll have to apply for some Personal AmExes,

and get those D*'d.

What's "D*"??

And the thing about personal cards is why I am asking. If I know I'll get the 1993 date applied to a new personal card account, I'll apply ASAP to improve my account age. A 20 year old open card account suddenly showing up my report would do wonders.

You can test the waters by trying to get your other Business AmExes D*'d.

If they will be re-issued as 1993,

it's a VERY GOOD bet that any additional Personal AmExes will inherit that Member Since Year.

Yes. That's the idea. I think I am going to call and say I damaged my Plum card and that it cracked along the swipe strip....something that's actually happened recently to two of my cards. Gotta stop keeping the wallet in the back pocket. If the re-issue comes back as "member since 93", I think I'll be in the clear.

My only wonder at that point is if there's a lag/process/problem involved with transferring that backdating to a new personal card since I currently don't have one. I'd be a little bummed if the card showed up my credit report with a May 2013 start date.

Since you don't have any Personal AmExes,

it's very likely that a Personal AmEx will be issued as 2013.

Once it arrives, just call AmEx to have it re-issued.

It may take 2 statement cycles for the new AmEx to show up.

OK. We'll see. Thanks for the advice. First I'll see what a reissue of my Plum produces and I'll go from there.

One final question on this backdating issue:

As far as replacing one of the other cards due to "damage" to see what backdating is put on the re-issued card, do you think it makes any subtle difference if I do it online or by phone? The option is there on the account page.

If you do it by phone, you can casually mention 1993.

Oh. I thought it would be better to not say anything at all. I figured I would just ask for a replacement card and see what member date shows up on the card. If it comes back 1993 then I can pretty much confirm that future cards would honor that date. Wouldn't you agree? Or do you think not saying anything would result in the card coming back with the younger year (2012)?

If you're not going to say anything, just do it on the web site.

hahahaha. You always leave me hanging with part of question. Do you think not saying anything will simply produce a duplicate with the 2012 member date? or would the system generate a 93 member date based on the information on my homepage saying "member since 1993".

I personally think that because your login says "Member Since 1993",

your cards SHOULD also say 1993.

However, that is not always automatic.

I suspect that if you just request a re-issue with no human involvement, you'll get 2012.

The downside of trying the web site first is that if you DON'T get 1993,

and call in again for a re-issue,

your account may get flagged for unusual activity.

All of this is really not that important, it's your PERSONAL AmEx that is the goal.

Yes. The personal Amex is the goal. But I am just testing the system with this re-issue. If it gives me a 1993 on the replacement, then I will feel more confident moving forward on apping for a personal account.

Amex knows I'm desperate for them. Ex has my AAOA at less than a year. I've done my pleadings even though I was in good standing as AU from my father, for Amex Gold in 89-90, I was told to let some of my accounts age first. the agents are actually very nice except for the fact they won't give me card lol. I guess they know why I want them

I had an AMex account years ago, dropped it in 2000 in a bankruptcy, applied in 2004 for a corporate card through employer and was turned down.

Fast forward to 2013 with some time behind me and credit in better shape, I applied and was approved.

The new card showed up with the 2013 date on it, but when it hit my credit reports, it shows up as being open since 1996.

So take a look at the age of your account on your credit report, as long as it shows an open date on there of what you think it should be, you are fine.

Update:

Replacement card arrived dated 1993! What's important to note here is that I didn't ask for the card to be backdated. I simply requested a replacement due to damage. Since my account homepage says 1993, there is apparently no need to make a special request. It happens automatically. Test completed. I am officially backdated to 93. Now I need a personal card to make it matter on my credit reports.
