Flat-out denied, darn it. Well... I can always try again in a few months. I've been paying down DH's utilization and that's about done so my solo accounts are next.

Check your reports for an AmEx hard pull.

If there are no pulls, it means you're on the blacklist, and got denied without a pull.

*IF* AmEx *DID* pull a hard inquiry, there's hope once you get utilization down closer to 0%.

I checked Experian as soon as I got the response. There's a hard there. There's only one other in the past year and it'll roll past the 12 month mark in September, so at least it won't hurt much.

I would say your chances are good for the Zync later.

But, REALLY, AmEx EXPECTS their cards to be PIF, so get utilization down to a teeny bit above 0%

Well, thanks. I guess it's nice to know I don't have to wait 3 more years. If things work out for us as I hope (huge business deal in the works, but dragging out much longer than expected) I'll be able to try again before Christmas with that near-zero utilization. Best part of getting a back-dated card - or two - is that I could tell Crap1 to stick their $5 monthly "membership fee" where the sun doesn't shine.

I 100% forgot about an AMEX Business Gold account I had back in 2006, a new card is being sent out overnight showing that. However, no luck with the wife's card, that'll stay 2012. Oh well...

Seriously, watch your mail.

AmEx axed me early last year, and I didn't get a single pre-approval till I tried the pre-selector.

So here's a question, now that I'm pushing 50K in credit limits (I remember being happy with the $100 CL BBRZ card not so long ago here...)

Can I EVER reapply for an amex and get approved? They FR'd me way back when and i ignored it and they closed my AU cards as well as my own that I had just gotten.

Now their pre-selector just kicks me a "no" the second I hit submit, even when doing private browsing/with no cookies there to help 'em deny me.

What should I be doing here? It's hard to fully participate over at FT without Amex on my side. ;)

edit - I should also mention, my EQ Fico has been 699 for months and months and months now [TU is over 700, has been for awhile, and it feels gooooooooood]. I'm totally top o' the bucket. Just waiting for my student loan defaults to age off my report now. The default/collection accounts have an open date of 8/05 and a close date of 12/07.. I had thought they'd be gone by now but I guess student loans are a different animal. bleh.

Hi GGE.

Go ahead and apply for a Zync every few months.

If you're still blacklisted, instant no means no hard pull.

Eventually AmEx will let you back in, but you'll have to pass F/R

Thanks. :)

No problem there. My only reason for not responding was having no access to a fax machine, and everyone's insistance that snail-mail wouldn't make it. If I understand correctly by reading posts here on CB lately that some have had luck emailing in their forms instead, then it should be no issue whatsoever.

They do HHI, right?

[edit - of course, my cards never said 1982 on them. I called them to ask and they just decided to FR all of CB instead... or at least that sure was the timing of it. Not that I said anything stupid, mind you! Anyhow, don't think I'll do that again!]

AmEx usually just wants your 1040 summary, I don't know if the summary breaks things down.

Hm, well then they're gonna get two 1040 summaries. Two employed individuals here. (If they ask).

I applied for the SPG card because they have a limited time 30K points offer and I never had the SPG one before (my husband did).

Nothing instant, the computer took awhile thinking about it and then spit out the following:

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide an Instant Account number at this time.

Your application will be processed as soon as possible, and we will notify you of the decision by mail within 14 days.

Thank you for applying!

So my hunch is that I'll get a FR letter in the mail that I can reply to, and then hopefully get the card. If my stated income was too low or if I was blacklisted I think I'd have gotten an instant denial, so this will do. For now. :)

Posted

If you file separately, AmEx only wants your 1040.

Ok, my husband and I file jointly. He's the one with the income. That will have to do.

Credit.com says one new inquiry as of 8/2012.

When I did my regular pulls this morning my most recent inquiry was 5/2012 (my Citi AA Visa sig card - bonus miles! :D ).

NOT blacklisted.. that's all I wanted was a chance.. or a chance at a chance, LOL!

Gonna, are you worried about being blacklisted from refusing to do f/r and closing your accounts? That will not get your blacklisted. Here is what will happen. If you apply, go through regular app process. Sometime before you activate or soon after you activate, the card will be suspended pending f/r. So be really accurate on your next Amex app.

Thanks! Yup, I figured I'd either be blacklisted right off the bat from refusing the F/R back in spring 2010 (in which case I wouldn't get a hard pull and I'd just pretend I didn't apply at all), or else I'd get a hard inquiry followed by a fair consideration and then an approval or denial - I further presumed that in the event I was approved, it would be conditional upon them receiving my F/R information this time.

I checked my tax forms before filling out the application with this in mind. Though I did add together our main income with our child's part time job income, but that only altered things by a few grand a year. If they really don't want HHI, then ours alone is still pretty close to what's on the app.

Back from my self-imposed "I'm tired of all this drama" exile, with a vow to never post when I'm in a really pissy mood, and zip my lip from now on.

ANYHOO, just figured I'd update this thread with some useful information that I figure ONLY applies to me because, well, I've been me long enough to know...

AmEx will not backdate my account because my previous account was closed with a negative status. So I burned an inquiry and took another unnecessary hit to AAOA for a card I didn't need. YES, I talked to the credit bureau dept., as did the CSR.

OK, so I broke my vow already and posted in a pissy mood. But I only did it to add a data point.

Dang, I'd never get to post. :P

Seriously, don't give up hope.

If AmEx forgives being IIB 8 years ago, and backdates, it may still happen. ;)

Gaby, I thought you mentioned earlier in thread that they had already backdated you to 1990? Although you also mentioned you thought your real member date was 1986. Did you try and get them to backdate to 1986?

My online date says Member since 1990, but the card reports as 2012. They won't backdate it.

Interesting. I have heard of some cases of this. Seems to be a more recent policy. And more cases of disconnect between member since dates and reported dates. Another scenario that happen to my wife. She was added as au to my card in 2011. Reported as open in xx/2011. Got her backdated from old account she was au on. She apps for her own cards. They don't show proper member date. Get that fixed. Now, her own cards report as open since her member date of 1995, but the au account still showing xx/2011. Credit card bureau department says new policy on au accounts is to report on their actual open date on au card. Who knows though but I'm not really willing to risk it. Her member date wasn't fully fixed when she was added as au and credit bureau department can be tuff to deal with. The question is if I added her today, whether or not she would get her member date open date.

I spent 45 minutes and dealt with several people. "Nope, you burned us. No backdating for you." Funny how that didn't apply to anyone else either here or on MyFico.

yes, they changed their policy re AU backdating, but supposedly everyone who had their own card is backdated to that original member since date, regardless of what went down. Except for me. Naturally.

Not true. I have heard of several others who had same scenario that happened to you if that makes you feel any better. Well at least you didn't get blacklisted and future amex's will at least backdate to this year. While not as good, in 10 years you will appreciate it.

I must have missed those. The only people I've heard of who were refused backdating were AUs. Haven't seen anyone else refused backdating due to past negative experience.

Btw, I wouldnt be totally surprised that credit report changes in a few months to reflect member date. Also interesting question is if new card would behave the same. Since most of backdoor backdating involves just changing member date, could make backdating more difficult if disconnect between member date and reported open date increases. As you need to involve credit report bureau to fix and they are much more difficult to get anything from. Oh and credit bureau unit keeps phone logs. I tried calling them several times for my wife and the au account and they kept referring as we told you in last conversation with us, ...
