Dr. Coetzee tries to put a positive spin on the situation, but the truth is that the quality of his group's performances has decreased precipitously after soccer players have entered the audience. The musicians show they are entirely unprofessional by being easily distracted by the game. Nearly all of them focus their attention on the soccer ball instead of the conductor's baton. Notes are often played terribly off time, and-- though this is quite difficult on a vuvuzela-- off key. They also deviate from the sheet music as composed and break into improvised vocal performances, some of them obscene.

 

The situation is so bad that few symphony patrons even bother to come to the stadium any more. This is only partly due to rude officials insisting that only 22 people occupy the prime listening space within the field boundaries at any time (not including themselves of course!) It's more because the performance is often so awful that it isn't worth listening. A few have even donned ear protection so they can concentrate on the incidental soccer game instead. The fact that the soccer play is fairly good is a bonus-- so their season subscription to this formerly great Philharmonic is not entirely wasted.
