Received odd settlement offer letter from AFNI.

This month, I was sent an unsolicited letter from AFNI offering to settle an old $1,800.00 Verizon account for $100.00.

 

I recall having this account but I'm pretty sure it may have been closed when I lived in another state over 7 years ago.

 

It is not showing up on any of the 3 major CRAs, and I don't recall it being on there ever. It may have been on there a few years ago and got deleted by me, but I am not quite certain.

 

And I thought the fact that they would offer to settle an almost $2000 account for $100 out of the blue was odd.

 

What should I do? DV? Get the last date of activity? Or offer the settlement with a PFD?

Push back for a PFD.

Send out a DV. Afni is a watch list agency. I would bet it is a SOL violation, that's why they are offering to settle. If they get $5 from you that resets the clock on the SOL to the date payment is received.

The OP does not clarify, but assuming that this was charged off (OP called it an old debt) then making a payment will NOT reset the SOL.

I got 2 settlement letters from AFNI today. They are for debts that do not show up on my credit report. Both are more than 7 years old, one is about 10 years old (since last payment). I didn't know if I should even respond.

If it were me, I would send them a nice little FOAD letter. But that's just me.

well, if you wanted to, you could have some fun with them...but an FOAD should make them go away

I received a similar letter last year (for an old verizon account) and sent AFNI a version of a FOAD letter I found on CB. Never heard a thing back. It was from at least 10 years ago when I lived in NY.
