I hate this computer

Can anyone tell me why the H my laptop gets so frigging hot?? Hot, like, the mouse pad area becomes uncomfortable to touch for more than a few seconds.

 

It is this model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834220349 and I use this lap cushion: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16834998475 (I don't really like it, but it was a gift and I haven't gotten around to getting anything better.)

 

and I'm not doing anything wild and crazy with it - 90% of the time is surfing the internet, but not watching videos or anything, just shuffling between CB, FB and a couple other message boards. I leave it on pretty much 24/7 unless I have to restart it or take it somewhere (not often), but have it set to hibernate after 30 minutes of non-use.

 

I guess I can get a cooling pad if I have to, although my setup (sofa side table) isn't very conducive to it. Open to other ideas/suggestions/possible issues, as well.

my Dell labtop gets hot too, not the mouse or keyboard, but the bottom of it, If I have it on lap I need to put a towel or pillow because it gets hot.

 

It does cool down after I am off of it for a while.

Could a towel or especially a pillow be making your situation worse ? On a laptop, aren't some of the vents for exhausting hot air located on the underside ?

This is just a shot in the dark .. but I wonder if the heat is due to the combination of the material the palmrest area is made of and due to where the hard drive is located on your laptop. When I briefly owned a Dell laptop before I returned it, the hard drive was located where your right wrist rests when you type; in addition the palmrest was made of a thin plastic such that after awhile leaving my right wrist there was like trying to hold a steering wheel of your car after it's been parked in the sun on a summer day. It was as if the heat from the surface of the hard drive were passing directly into my wrist.

 

I don't know if it would make any difference, but maybe your brand of laptop comes with power settings software that lets you adjust the speed of the cpu. On my laptop, I can implement a setting that causes the cpu to adjust its speed depending on the intensiveness of whatever software you're using .. like, if I'm just typing a letter, then the cpu speed is supposed to drop down but if I were doing intensive gaming then the cpu speed is supposed to go up.

There's a great free program that I've used before that will tell you how hot your hard drive and cpu get called MobileMeter.

Once you laptop starts getting that hot, take it as a warning. Make sure you have your hard drive backed up. I am saying this from experience .

 

Now then, as to possible ways to get rid of some of that heat...make sure that the exhaust vent is not covered. Feel around your laptop, most likely at the back, for hot air blowing. It won't be blowing hard, but you will feel more heat coming from one area than from the rest of the unit. (also visually inspect for vents).

 

You want to get a cooler similar to what BobbyDebt suggested. Not every cooler will work terrific for every computer, but the basic concept is that you want a couple of little (enclosed) fans that will suck the heat away from your laptop.

 

Question, is the laptop getting hotter now than what it was before?....like say, a month or two ago?

Oh, I know. I cooked my last laptop, too. That's why I'm paranoid about this.

 

It's not hotter than when I got it (a little over a year ago), thankfully. It's just hot, all the time. The bottom is positively scorching, which I know is to be expected (the little vent and fan is clearly not nearly enough to disperse this much heat) but my old Toshiba didn't have this problem with the top surface getting crazy hot, even right up to the day it fried itself.

 

I guess I need to get some kind of fan pad.

My last laptop used to get hot and for some reason I decided to vacuum it out from the underside fans.

I ended up pulling a piece of lint the size of a lime out of there and it didn't get hot anymore.

I routinely vacuum out the fans on both of my laptops now.

I go further then that.. I take out fan area and clean the underneath of the heat coil....

Are you getting any heat cracks in the case? I got that with my....oh heck, I can't even remember the brand now....it was a tablet PC. A less known brand but had great reviews initially...but the model I got sucked.

Cons: It's passive cooling, it won't keep your machine cool like a fan stand will when your machines working hard. While gaming away from a desk it doesn't keep my laptop cool, but then again my machine needs a fan stand while gaming regardless of location so I plop my laptop and fan stand on my lap and use this as a mouse platform to keep my mouse and pad at a comfortable hip height.

With any electrical or electronic device that contains resistors, as long as the electricity is flowing, there's heat being generated. When there's enough heat generated then things get hot to the touch. So even having the desktop running may lead to heat generation and heat build-up. Only way to be sure that the laptop will cool is by turning it off when not in use. A desktop computer is better designed to keep on 24 hours/7 days a week.

So, I let DH dismantle my laptop, and he found a dust bunny the size of Rhode Island stuck in the processor (processor fan? something like that). He blew it all out and now the thing is absolutely silent. And cool. It's glorious.
