ANFI is freaking unbelievable!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- More than 70,000 consumers complained about third-party debt collectors in 2007, but one Sacramento couple said they have good reason to bark about the bill they received.

Steve Fanelli received a bill from AFNI collections claiming an Andy Fanelli owes Verizon Online $142.34.

And although Steve Fanelli does indeed live with an Andy Fanelli, there is a small, furry problem with the bill.

Andy Fanelli is Steve Fanelli's dog.

"The point is that Andy has never had a Verizon account. We were just curious why this showed up," Steve Fanelli said.

After some "dogged" detective work by Call 3 Problem Solvers, Verizon said the debt is owed by a guy on the East Coast named Andy Fanelli.

"Just because there's an Andy Fanelli back east doesn't mean you send a letter to an Andy Fanelli in California," dog owner Shawn Donovan said. "There has to be something else to connect it."

Andy Fanelli, who is Steve Fanelli's and Donovan's Lhasa Apso, has its own American Express card that Donovan got when it was offered for "family members."

"It's an active card. From time to time I take my girlfriends to lunch on Andy," Donovan said.

Consumers have complained about AFNI online and to the Illinois Attorney General, claiming AFNI tries to collect outdated or incorrect billing.

AFNI told Problem Solvers that it is a large company and diligent about debt verification.

The company said it thinks the problem with the Fanelli's happened because of the American Express Card.

Verizon Online cancelled Andy's debt, which he just shook off.

I apologize, I'm easily confused....how did the dog get an Amex ? I mean is he an AU, plus how do we know that Andy Fanelli wants to treat Steve's girlfriends to lunch. I mean how can he pay his bill.

And boy o boy won't George be pissed when he finds out that the dog has not been CLD'd

In addition, though not credit related. I'm also a little confused as to the living/ownership arrangments here, I see reference to two male owners, although Shawn could be feminine, but then I also see reference to girlfriends.

NEVER ask a question that you don't REALLY want the answer to...especially when it involves California :clapping:

+1 :clapping:

Anyway, I'm not one to defend Afni, especially since I once got a bill from them about a Verizon account... and I have never in my life had a Verizon account, but these people lost any sympathy from me when they knowingly and intentionally got a CC for the dog. People and companies alike play fast and loose with terms like "HHI" and "family member", but no intelligent and reasonable person literally believes a dog can be legitimately included in that.

nah, but the dog will be pissed NOW since the AA will follow the negative publicity that the owners brought to AXP by publicizing the card.

do you think he'll get an AA letter per the FCRA?

<_<

A broader question would be whether a dog has protection under statutes related to consumers, who are often defined as a natural PERSON. And given that the FCRA, strictly speaking, would not apply to a person who holds only an authorized user status, there would be a secondary issue of applicability even if one construes the definition of individual so liberally as to include a canine...

This does remind me, though, that I ought to get some back-ups for my cats...

yes, they would not want to be caught in the embarrassing situation of their AmEx being denied at PetSmart due to their lack of wanting to submit to a FR. Of course, cats rarely submit to anything, so AmEx should build that into their modeling.

So do dogs apply more than cats do?

Wow, that's ruff. Looks like the collections industry is going to the dogs.

Seriously though, this is just a coincidence, since his dog has a people name.

riiiiiight, cuz that never happens

I want to see a card with the name

Bonkers McGee

On it.

Good ole Bonkers, he loved chasing cars and his tail, pooping on the front lawn, and earning miles through his delta sky miles credit card.

Wait a minute, that actually sounds like my Grandpa.........never mind.
