  • 4 weeks later...

So I'm excited. Been rebuilding credit from some real estate investment mistakes several years ago as well as credit card debt from that business. Been rebuilding with some secure cards the past 8-9 months and getting judgments from credit cards paid off. Middle score around 600 or so for myself and my wife.

Both of us have Capital One accounts with attorneys from 4 years ago from said business. Capital One already wrote them off. Negotiating with lawyers on those 4 accounts to get paid for about 35-50%. I logged into CreditKarma today and it said I was prequalifed for two different Capital One credit cards. I didn't believe it, but thought I would give it a shot. I got approved for $3k for the Capital One Platinum AND $2k for the Capital One Quicksilver cards! And i got approval for both of those for both me and my wife! I could hardly believe it, considering I have those other Capital One accounts with attorneys right now.

I still can't get approved with other credit card companies, such as Discover, but this is progress!

Have you looked at the CreditPulls database on this site (link in the navigation bar at the top of the forum header)? Forum users enter their credit card approvals and declines, the initial credit limit, their FICO at the time that they applied, and the CR that was pulled. You can query this database, entering the card you're interested in and your current score, and you'll get a list of all the entries with scores equal to or lower than yours, and their results.

Will these work if I'm opted out?

Generally no.

They may work if you already have a account with the bank your attempting to check Pre-Qual offers on.

Sometimes also they may have an offer for you but it's very spotty.

I was just denied by them too. Why in the world would they say I per-qualified and then deny me afterwards?

They gave such ridiculous excuses too.

Too many inqs

3 out of the 4 were from my car loan. The other was for CapOne back in August.

Not even credit

Hence me applying for the card. Really?

Derogatory Marks

I have late payments from my student loan from almost two years ago

Credit History Too New

I only have my CapOne card reporting for the past 4 months.

Honestly what should one do to get more cards when you're denied for not having cards?! It really is crazy.

I did a HP for nothing. :aggressive:

When I started this about 4 weeks ago, I only had 2 credit lines.

1 was a paid CO from 2008.

The other from a secured CapOne card I got in 2013.

I was approved by credit unions x2, Capital One x2, and Barclays.

Technically you only have one revolving account though. Still it's longer than mine.

You still got denied though huh? I'm seriously upset with that decline. Bunch of bums Discover is.

If I were you I'd call in for a recon. That way you can talk to the analyst. They may give you a shot.

I called twice and spoke with a "manager" who told me that there was nothing that could be done except me doing a joint account with someone else.

That was one of the most stupidest things I've ever heard.

I guess I could call back again but a different number to speak with someone else. Do you think a week later is too late?

who did you apply for? I was denied for Barclay's. I waited til I got my denied letter before calling the number. I'd try again in a week. If it still doesn't workout, I'd just keep working on cleaning my reports.

It was the Discover IT card.

I haven't gotten the letter yet since it was just on Thursday.

As far as cleaning up my reports I need more CCs reporting since that is a reason I keep getting denied (how is the irony in that?!). The other thing is the lates I have from my student loan from about 2 years ago. I wrote a GW letter and got two different responses to it. Both result in deleting a late but one answer was for one and the other answer for all. Guess I just have to wait and see.

No one has mentioned my collection from midland which is due to fall off in a year.

With your scores, I'm surprised you were declined - but Disco has some funky guidelines. Ideally, you should have at least 3 active TL's. Adding TL's to a very thin file, you've got a couple options-

- Go with a subprime specialist like Cap1. With your scores, you'll certainly be approved, and you might even start out with a decent CL

- Check the CreditPulls database here in CreditBoards (look for the link at the top of the forum page). Enter your FICO and the desired card, and see what results others with similar scores have had. Check the notes for people mentioning thin files

- Start with a credit union - they tend to be a little more relaxed in their standards. If you have any way of qualifying for Navy Federal membership, they're an especially cooperative CU.

- Secured Card - there's a saying that "high limits beget high limits". If you can afford to park a fair chunk of change in a savings account for 6-12 months (like $2-5k), other lenders will take note, and in 3 months, you'll start qualifying with starting limits equal to your secured card.

Last summer, I was in a similar boat with no open TL's in my name (AU's don't really count). I started with a secured card from NFCU for $5k. The day after my 3rd statement cut, I app'd Navy for an unsecured card and was approved for $10k. After that, the approvals came easily.

I don't think Discover will reconsider applications.

I called three times and no one would do a manual review.

Just my experience though.

I was surprised too! Especially when I heard of another member who had quite a few collections and no other cards and was approved for a unsecured Discover IT card.

Right now the only card I have is a secured CapOne card. It has such a low balance but it definitely helped with me building up my score more.

I am part of a CU, that is my main bank, but they are so darn picky with cards and such that I don't want to waste a HP to just be denied. (Well they pull TU so it wouldn't be horrible since I can B*)

I just got approved this morning for a secured card with BOA with a 1K deposit. I am really hoping that that helps.

It's nice to hear that others were in similar position and were able to pull through. After this card reports and I am hoping able to B* I am going to app for a Walmart card for my TU score.

Thank you for your suggestions, they are very much appreciated!

I fell into the Discover trap 2X.

My fault never again!

I told them that I will NEVER app with them again.

I lost 4 points on that INQ!!

I'm getting preapproved on the BOA site now, even though my paid charge off is with them from 2008/9.

Do they pull TU for preapprovals? That's the only one I don't have frozen and that CO is currently "under investigation".

BOA pulls EX. They can pull TU but you have to ask for them to do it.

Strange, because other than a couple new accounts reporting, nothing has changed. EX and EQ are both frozen.

Do pre qualifiers work with frozen reports? Probably do, because those are just soft pulls, correct?
