  1. 1. Should we make the 3-hr trip to visit Grandma?

So, my family, MIL, and SIL+family were all supposed to caravan up to visit DH's grandma tomorrow. It's about a 3-hour trip each way. Now, one of SIL's kids is sick so they are all not going. MIL wants to know if we still want to go.

Reasons for going: the trip has already been cancelled once due to blizzard conditions. It's to celebrate Grandma's 90th birthday. We haven't seen her since...before Thanksgiving, maybe?

Reasons not to go: it's supposed to be 0* or colder tomorrow, and MIL is a worst-case-scenario kind of person, and is picturing us stranded in the middle of nowhere in freezing weather (at least with two cars, someone could drive for help). It would be more enjoyable if we rescheduled for a time when SIL and fam could go, too.

WWYD?

Go and do everything in your power to make grandma feel like a queen for a day. Cook her dinner, clean her house, paint her nails, ask her stories about her childhood. You'll never regret it. Then schedule to go again with SIL and plan a girl's day for all of you while the guys work around her house.

We had a huge family gathering for my great grandma's 90th birthday. She was in great health and loved seeing the extended family. A week later she was in the hospital from a stroke and three weeks later we were all together again for her funeral. You should go, without any of the inlaws if necessary.

i'm with Nem also... 90th birthdays are pretty rare and... ya know.

just be as prepared as you can be... have everyone's cell phones fully charged, have the state PD's phone number handy in case you need it, have plenty of blankets, plenty of gas in the cars, blah blah blah. it's murphy's law... if you are totally prepared, virtually nothing can go wrong. :)
