I received a letter last week from a collection agency (Universal Fidelity LP). The debt in question was apparently owed to Movie Gallery as a late fee when they went out of business. The rental date according to the letter is 02/12/10. The debt is $8.58. I have a few questions (I'm fairly new to debt in general and have never had a collections account before). Should I file a dispute with the company? If so, how do I go about it? I assume there is a form to be followed somewhere. Is it possible this is zombie debt? I had the movie gallery account in Alabama (I've lived in Georgia since 04-2012), and according to the site linked below, it may have passed the statute of limitations. I admit that I have no idea what type of debt it is, although from the descriptions given on the site, I assume it is either a written or open ended account. If it is zombie debt, how do I address it? http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/statuteLimitations.shtml Should I just pay the money? Will it hurt my credit when I try to buy a house in the near future? I guess when you get right down to it, it's only $8.58, and I might have owed it to them when they went out of business. It seems like I should be able to pay it, and everything just goes away, but I guess that's not the case. Thanks in advance for any time and consideration.
