  1. I'm in the process of fixing my wife's credit. Two separate medical accounts remain, let's call them A & B A: Medical business bureau. The starting date per NJ law is May 2007. The account was placed for collections in Sep 2007. B: Commonwealth Financial. the starting date per NJ law is June 2010. The account was placed for collections in June 2013. C: Northeast Credit & Collections. Same as B, but showed up with a different (invalid) address and different CA name. Prior to about 2 weeks ago the CRA showed the following: TU: B EX: B & A (listed twice, one with account number 010387xxxx, the other with 10387xxxx, same amounts, same account) EQ: A & C I made the mistake of disputing both in August, prior to finding whychat's medical process. Naturally both verified, none dropped. In November, I started whychat's process: Yes, I opted out Yes, I deleted old addresses (one old one remained due to A using that as the address. I've tried removing the address online and via snailmail unsuccessfully. It's a PO box if it matters.) Yes, I sent an initial dispute letter to each CRA. Per CRA they were verified, but there was no correspondance from the CA showing proof of validation Yes, I sent medical DV to each respective CA. Yes, I sent follow up dispute to each CRA on or about Nov 26. The letter to C bounced back as undeliverable. I scanned that envelope showing undeliverable, wrote up whychat's letter, and sent to EQ. I sent the statute of limitations letter to A, and upon delivery sent a similar letter to EX & EQ. Results: TU: 100% clear. EQ: per back door report, only A remains. No response from them yet regarding the SOL letter. EX: received response dated Dec 11 stating "we have already investigated this information and the credit grantor has verified its accuracy. " This comment doesn't distinguish between which account, A or B, that they are referring to. I had never disputed B. A was disputed in August. Per their mailed copy of the report, A & B remain. HOWEVER, per a report pulled from creditsesame.com on 12/17, only A remains. I know third party reports are generally useless for disputes, but if B was still on record at experian, would it not be on the credit sesame report? Regardless, I'm unsure how to proceed. As the newer medical collection appears to have been deleted across the board, the old account that is well outside the SOL remains. Assuming EQ validates or says something similar to EX like we've already investigated, should I send a method of verification letter? Should I just move to the HIPPA complaint with FTC and state authorities? thanks for any help
  2. Hi, guys, I've been reading this board for a couple of weeks now and in preparation for challenging a medical debt, opted out and called the CRAs to update my addresses. Experian let me do it on the phone, but I couldn't get through to the others so I'll just write to them. Here's the boneheaded thing I did: I called a CA by accident and thought it was a CRA. I got hold music, started doing a couple of other things and basically didn't hear when the woman got on so I jumped into the call and told her I wanted to updated my addresses. Which she was happy to do. Oh my God. And then about 5 minutes into the conversation she said "this is an attempt to collect a debt" and I nearly swallowed my tongue. I quickly ended the conversation without discussing anything further with her. So since I've just updated my address with the CA, is it even worth attempting to validate the debt with the CA and verify with the CRA as part of Why Chat's HIPAA method? Or should I just try to pay the OC (hospital) quickly with HIPAA insert a method? It's only going to be on my CR for another year but I'm afraid I may have renewed their interest in me. The amount is $1,500 so I'm fearing they'll get pretty aggressive or even sue. Any advice (other than to double check my phone numbers and pay attention)? Thanks!
  3. Hi, guys, I am new to credit awareness and this board but I’ve found your comments tremendously educational and I’m ready to tackle my credit problems. Here’s my situation: I checked my credit report and scores for the first time two weeks ago and this is what I found: Scores: 593; 632; 649. Collections: Several medical bills from 2008 (six for around $200 each). I disputed them online and they were actually deleted! Whoa. It works. There is another collection for $1500 that wasn’t deleted and was updated last month. It’s from the same CA as the other smaller ones that were, so I’m not sure of my next step. I don’t want to do anything to cause them to re-add those other ones. Should I HIPAA the CRAs first or the CA? Derogatory/Public Records: 1 IRS tax lien, satisfied in 2011. They now have a program where they will remove liens from public records and I applied for that last week. Fingers crossed. There’s also a default civil judgment from 2010 which I’ve also paid. Should I try a GW letter to the OC or their attorney? Or GW letter to the CRAs? I actually don’t remember being served this lawsuit (hence the default judgment) but I’m going to go the courthouse and check the record of how they served. Maybe they served a past address and maybe that would be grounds to have it vacated. It’s a long shot, I know. That’s it for negatives. As for positives, I have one car loan that I got 2 ½ years ago. The interest rate is 17 percent but I wasn’t going to get a better offer and I needed a car as my old one had died. I wouldn’t be able to refinance because I owe less than $7,000 on the loan. I hadn’t credit card in 10 years. I got used to paying in cash and thought that was good but I realize that I cannot opt-out of the credit-based society because it’s counting against me in so many ways. So I applied for a Capital One secured card two weeks ago and have a $350 limit. I had applied for a Barclays credit card but was declined. I am going to use the Capital One responsibly for four months and then try again for another credit card if my scores go up appreciably. Is it realistic of me to expect to get a real CC so soon with the judgment and single medical collection on my CR? I expect the lien will be removed. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I’ve learned so much reading your forums. Thanks!
  4. So I have my old addresses deleted. I received a reply from the last bureau yesterday (took them long enough). I opted out also. Now I know I'm supposed to send Debt Verification letters to the bureau. I'm scared to send them. What happens if I send them, they verify....are they going to put the old addresses back onto my credit report? If I send these letters, will the collection agencies start calling me again (for the ones that aren't paid) or will the ones that are paid be renewed? I'm terribly nervous. My goal is the move my score up about 50 pts by the time all this is completed. Enough to get a mortgage at a decent rate. Its my last chance to do anything. Medical debt is the ONLY negative thing on my credit report....its driving me crazy how lack of insurance for 6 months and getting seriously ill, led to all this drama and ruined my life.
  5. I have started the process to clean up my medical collections. I opted out and deleted old addressed and sent my intial letters to Equifax and Transunion. Yesterday I received a letter from Experian telling me that they were alerted of possible fraud from one of the other reporting agencies (I did not sendthem a letter because I have no medical collections reporting). Today I received a letter from Equifax telling me they are unable to locate my credit file eith the information provided (I sent them the first page of my credit report that had my name, ssn and addresd with all the accounts I was disputing circled) and are requesting a copy of my birth certificate, drivers license to verify all the information that was clearly listed on the page of my credit report that I sent. They even sent me an email letting me know they started my dispute. Is this a stall tactic? They want me to send this information AND resubmit my request. How should I proceed?
  6. I am VERY new to this whole process but I am going to attempt to clean up my credit. Back in 2007, I was in a car accident (only 18 yrs old) and working pt time, NO insurance and the er/medical bills started rolling in. I couldn't pay them at the time and most have went Into collections. My husband and I are going to try and purchase a home in the next year. I have paid a few of the bills the the hospital and they are still showing on my report by the CA. I am getting ready to pay off the last 4 accounts on CR but would like to know how to go about doing it?
  7. Hi All First time poster, long time lurker. I sent pre hipaa letters to Transunion and Equifax (the accounts aren't on EX) for 5 of my 12 medical collections. I received a letter from TU THE NEXT WEEK saying that they are all removed. Still waiting on EQ. I didn't want to send too many at once, so I'm going to wait 60 days and send TU another pre hipaa for the rest. Anyone see potential issues with that? I've read a lot, but I want to make sure I didn't miss anything. I also have some paid charge offs that I sent goodwill emails for yesterday: Chase, Credit One, and Capital One. I've seen success stories on these, but not any in the past few months. Has this worked for anyone recently? I'll update if I hear anything from them...crickets so far, but I forgot to include my # (good job, dork) in the email. Hopefully they'll email me or look at my account because I know they have it. Other than that, I have a paid Verizon charge off that I've disputed twice to no avail and an unpaid utility that's only on Experian. I'm going to try to goodwill Verizon and dispute the utility. Side note: I've had pretty good success having new collection accounts that pop on removed if I dispute them right away (I have credit monitoring).
  8. So back in 2010 I had went to the ER twice and had a $100 copay for each time. Well the bills got away from me and recently I've been trying to square off any and all old debts and get my credit back. So I called the OC (Hospital) and asked if I had any old bills still owed and they told me yes I had 2 which matched up to the 2 on my credit report only on my credit report they were reported by collection agencies. My question is if I pay the hospital (OC) the debts is there a way to force (force is a strong word, strongly recommend) the CAs to remove from my credit report? Right now they still show as unpaid and since they are no longer the Collection Agencies account they cant update them to show collections paid in full, so doesnt that mean the only way for them to accurately report is to delete? I know being medical bills sometimes gives you a loophole and am wondering what I should do. Thanks in advance, Steven
  9. Why Chat, When going through the HIPAA process and looking at credit reports, I remember where I had paid a collection directly to the OC and they accepted the payment. I have since changed accounts (and possibly even banks) and I'm pretty sure I didn't keep a record of paying it off. How would I go about the paid collection dispute with no records to provide as proof? Thanks!
  10. I am in need of desperate help here. I am new to the creditboards forum and to the credit world. For years I avoided having credit cards and taking out loans, as this is the way that my mom and pop raised me. We did everything in cash. So here is my dilemma. I have read and re- read Whychat’s HIPPA program, warning I am so illiterate when it comes to credit reports and disputing things on it. So this is all foreign language to me. If I sound dum well I warned you lol I have this medical bill on my report by some CA. I owe $300.00 but they are reporting it as $350.00 ( I guess the $50 is their fee). I had no insurance at the time, so there is no EOB. I have taken the following steps so far: Opted out Requested my CR via mail and I was able to get it online I got my old addy’s deleted (only with TU), although nothing on my credit report is linked to the old addy’s Now I want to start the HIPPA program here is what I understand so far: Step 1 Dispute medical bill to all 3CRA wait to see if it is validated or not. NOW THIS IS WHERE IT GETS CONFUSING FOR ME: Once it comes back as verified do I contact the CA using the validation letter, sending cert. mail? Wait for a response from the CA? Then What? Contact the OC (hospital) with OR Contact the health care provider using “letter to health care provider” with the payment sending Cert mail. Then inform dispute with the 3 CRA as inaccurate reporting? OR Better yet can I just send payment to the health care provider with the HIPPA violation note, once I confirm that they did cash the MO, I can then dispute it with the 3 CRA as not reporting as valid? Oh boy this is quite overwhelming; I have faith that I will get it right!! Any help is appreciated. I am locked and loaded; I just need a target to shot my letters to!
  11. I wanted to check TU backdoor to get an update of my HIPAA process and I get an error message when I try. Is this normal from TU when disputing vial snail mail?
  12. I am new on here and have seen some really useful information but I need some advice. I just had surgery to remove my appendix and I don't have insurance. I have received all of our bills and most of them won't be a problem. Lab results and the surgical doctor bills I can cover but I am having a problem with is my hospital bill. I was there less than 20 hours and they are charging me 20K just for the hospital. At first they would not negotiate the bill and said it had to be paid in full but we got them down to $1000 a month. I still can't make that type of payment for 20 months straight.. My first bill isn't due for another few weeks so I was seeing if anyone had any advice. I have really good credit and don't want to mess that up. They said I do not qualify for assistance because my wife and I are both full time workers..
  13. Hello all. I am trying to buy my first home, and need to raise my credit score a little bit. I had one medical collections on my account. It was sold to a Medical Collection Company in Morgantown, WV. It was for $12,423. It was a few years old, and I did just pay it off in full 2 months ago. I would like it removed completely if possible. I have been reading, and found THIS... I have printed out the dispute form, and handwritten the whole thing. I was going to be mailing these letters to the Credit Reporting Agencies (Equifax, Transunion, Experian) on Friday if I get positive replies that I am doing this right. I used the reason for dispute that was typed on the link I provided. Is there any steps that I am missing, or anything that I should do before sending these letters??? Please let me know, as this is a huge part of what is holding me back from achieving my goal of buying a home. I have very limited credit, and need to be over a 640, and currently I am 20 points shy... I am hoping that removing this will really help me out...
  14. I am opted out. I have deleted all addresses. I sent dispute letters to each CRA. The accounts were verified and remain on report. However, I’ve yet to hear anything from the collection agency. I sent medical dispute validation letter to collection agency. Then I sent the follow up letter to the CRAs. Waited 30 days…nothing. So I did steps 5 & 6 again. Still nothing…. What do I do now? Other info… There are two accounts at the same collection agency for two different providers. Unsure what one account is…Credit report lists Date of first delinquency as 06/2007. The other one I KNOW I owe. Checked my dental EOB and it all looks correct. DOS 2/2009. I’m in Oklahoma. Thanks in advanced for your help. These are the last two medicals on my reports. I've paid everything else and can now file them on my taxes because of this site! Thanks again!!!
  15. hello, I am really confused as what to do next. I disputed medical collections on all three of my credit reports, 5 of them all from the same CA, results were Transunion deleted all yeah!! Experian came back as remains so nothing whas changed on my credit report. Equifax came back as verified. Now here is the kicker, I have been approved only to pay 5% of my medical bills dating back 5 years, this included the ones on my credit report. How do I handle this now as far as the two credit reports that are still reporting I want these deleted. They amount that I owe onthe credit reports are wrong since I only have to pay 5% of these bills. So should I confront the ca and get the amount changed and pay to delete? I am really confused on how to handle this.. Any suggestions would be great. thanks Heidi
  16. So me and the neighbor get to talking about him and his credit and come to find out he sent in a blanket NOT MINE dispute on a number of accounts. Most of them were medical and all the medicals remain. In trying to convert him over to the HIPPA method (he deleted as many old addys as he could per a conversation we had months ago) ...so what is best advice. I told him to make sure all those disputes are complete with responses from the bureau. On some posts I see where one states to wait 30 days before touching those accounts again. He does not want to let an idle month go by so he asked if he could dispute some non medical stuff since the addresses are now gone.... wait until that dispute is complete or 30 days from when it was received and complete.. and then start over with the HIPPA process. As I know Experian is typically known for the Previously Investigated response, will this hurt or hinder him in any way or will it still constitute as having been included in his PRE-HIPPA letter once sent again. Thanks in advance WhyChat and any others that may chime in.
  17. I was sick and unemployed and eventually homeless a few years back and racked up quite a bit of medical debt. I started paying them off, now that I have a job, and found out that the reporting was a violation of HIPAA. I read a lot online, but I'm still not understanding what I need to do. I want to pay the hospitals directly, but I don't know if I can. I saved up enough money to just pay the debt I have off. I've gotten engaged and we want to buy a house. However I know with my credit report I will NEVER qualify for a decent mortgage till 2018 (when those collection accounts are deleted). The rest of my credit report is great. All my car payments have been on time (I borrowed money from friends to pay while I was unemployed and homeless and living on my friend's couch) and my one credit card is excellent. I have good income and everything. I just have about oh....EIGHT MEDICAL COLLECTION ACCOUNTS. Some are paid in full and 3 aren't yet. I want to pay them off before September. Is there anything I can do? Or am I stuck renting till 2018.
  18. I sent out handwriiten Pre-hippa letters last week. All 3 received last Friday. Today, I checked SC and found a TU total deletion!!!! Score only jumped 15 points so far with 6 deletions and I am still waiting on the other two CRA's, but I am beyond excited!! You are a genius Why Chat! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!
  19. I have recently begun once again trying to fix some things on my credit report so that I can buy a house within the next 6 months. Unfortunately, last year when I began disputing things, I wasn't wise enough to the processes not to pay some things. So, I now have three paid medical collections all reporting that are my only negative items on my CR. Since they are paid, will the HIPAA process still work? Also, it is not the OC that is reporting, it's a CA. One CA (Professional Credit Management) had two accounts, both which I paid in full. The other (Syndicated Office Systems) had an account which I settled, much to my disapproval considering it was for a doctor who was assigned to me while I was unconscious and wasn't covered by my insurance at the time. Here is how they are showing on my EQ report pulled last week: SYNDICATED OFFICE SYSTEMS Agency Address: XXXXXXXXXXXX (800) 345-4261 Date Reported: 10/2012 Date Assigned: 10/2009 Creditor Classification: Medical/Health Care Creditor Name: ST FRANCIS HOSPITAL Accounts Number: 95494XXXX Account Owner: Individual Account. They are all showing the Medical Classification, which makes me think that I SHOULD be able to use HIPAA on them. Just not sure how to go about it.
  20. I feel dumb asking the questions I am going to ask but I want to make sure I am getting this correctly. I have some medical collections on my credit report I need off. I have been reading the forums and HIPAA guidelines over and over and I'm still confused. I am confused on the steps. Please help... Step 1: Opt out Step 2: address corrections Step 3: dispute letters to CRA Here is what I'm confused about: *****If the accounts are verified AND you receive a response FROM THE REPORTING CA ( Collection Agency) with account details that MATCH your records, you can then pay the ORIGINAL CREDITOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER directly using the HIPAA letter insert "a", be sure to follow ALL the directions HIPAA LETTER PROGRAM***** The "And receive a response from the reporting CA". Does this mean I need to send a DV letter to the CA at the same time as the CRA or does it mean when the account comes back verified do I send a DV letter to the CA? Please help me out with it because I do not want to get this wrong. I know it may be a dumb question but I am confused about it. Thank you in advance.
  21. Hello WhyChat! I live in NJ and if I am not mistaken have been fully covered for HOSPITAL since 2008 - these bills appear to be from 2009 and 2010. I have opted out & I am now sending in my PSE&G bill, ID, & SS to the CRA's for address deletions - On the bill should I white out the account numbers? In your HIPPA guidebook I saw that I should get an Explanation of medical benefits from the insurance company (when i call do i ask for specific time frames to coordinate with the collections below?) - OR should I first send out the "PRE HIPAA MEDICAL DISPUTE LETTER TO CRA"?? I honestly do not recall getting these services - I'm thinking they were for my toddler - but either way we both have insurance. Is there a time frame as to when insurance NO LONGER has to pay? Here are the 3 Medical Collections that appear on all 3 CRA's: 1) HEALTHCARE FUNDING SLTNS LLC Address: 4340 S MONACO ST UNIT 2 DENVER, CO 80237 (303) 296-3345 Original Creditor: Hospital Status: Collection account. $825 past due as of Jan 2013. 22. Hello! I know this is A LOT of info but I really really appreciate those that take the time to read it I am in Texas and trying desperately to rebuild my credit. I wish I had found this site sooner but oh well...hopefully with the help of the knowledge base here I can make up for some of the mistakes I made so far! I starting trying to repair my crdie on my own after talking to credit repair companies that seemed like scam artists. I have made a alot of progress so far and I am hoping to leap over the last few hurdles and be on my way to home ownership in about a year (fingers crossed) Where I started... 22 CA, 1 PR, i Repo, 1 Auto loan in good standing for 12 months, 2 Student Loans in good standing for 3 months TU 487 EQ 503 EX 485 I know, I know that is sooooo sad. I never really paid attention to my credit. I had family members that used my name for utility bills, bills that I let fall through the crack and didn't tend to and never opened a credit card in my life. Then one day I woke up and decided it is time to take control. My verifiable gross income is about 90k annually and I can't even get a decent car loan....smh! So irresponsible. Where I am... 5 Unpaid medical collections past SOL total $3800, 2 Utility bills one with CA $230 and one with OC $975 (CA is past SOL), University of Phoenix $655 past SOL,1 PR $4300 due to fall off 11/2013 Cap1 secured $300 10% util, Car Loan $18,700 54% util (reported by two different companies so it looks like I have two loans???), WalMart Card $600 just approved, Credit One (application in process for over three weeks!), Victoria's Secret (got 7-10 day response), Student Loans totalling $2900 payments start 07/13 Barclay denied (tried recin and they said try in 6 mo after building up payment history with new lines of credit CAP1 starting reporting in May) TU FICO 637 EQ FICO 587 EX FICO 580 My ROADBLOCKS I have 5 unpaid medical collections with Central Financial Control (OC is the same hospital for all). I wish I had seen the HIPPA dispute info before contacting them but I have already disputed with CRA's as not my account came back verified. Wrote a letter to CFC for DV and explained that they are reporting incorrectly and to verify the debt they would have to access my personal information. Requested that they have the original creditor contact me to resolve the matter and stop reporting to CRA immediately. Referenced HIPPA and Texas Medical Privacy Act in the letter. They responded that the debt is valid and I had to send a copy of my DL and SS card to them before they would release DV details to me. What should I do? The debt is past SOL and comes off reports in 12 - 18 months. Utility billl from ACCI (CA) for $230. Debt verified to CRA's and they respoded to DV with a copy of the bill from the original creditor. Past SOL should I offer a PFD? Utility bill from TXU (OC) for $975. Debt verified to CRA's and they responded to DV with a usage summary and description of charges. Part of the balance I recognize as mine but there is a charge for $730 that says "Migrated Balance previously written off profit/loss". It looks to me like they added an old balance to a new debt? Should the DOFD be the date the "migrated debt" became due? There is no detail for this balance...is the DV request valid without this info? I will pay the balance due less the "migrated debt" but the debt is from 2010 according to the credit report so still inside SOL. Next step? University of Phoenix claims that I owe $655 for a dropped class. I disagree. They will not go for PFD...tried to very nice letters and nope. They respond pay what you owe and we will update as paid off collection. Past SOL but will be on reports for the next three years. Any advice here? I have a HORRIBLE AAOA! I do not know anyone that I can ask to add me as an AU so there is not much I can do about that. Could I still get a decent interest rate on a mortgage if I garden for about a year? Should I add anything to my positive TL or just let things mature? My GOALS! Refinance this dang car and stop paying 18.99%! I would like to do this ASAP but the current car loan is my oldest positive at about 18 months old. Increase my current limits...I hear this is impossible for Cap1 secured unless I want to give them more $$ as a deposit Get a Care Credit approval for $5,000. Two kids in need of braces Buy a house next summer....everything else can be put aside to meet this goal. Any advice that the creditboards memebers can give me is much appreciated! I want to try the Whychat HIPPA process but I might be too late!
  23. Hi everyone. My ex husband has a large unpaid medical bill for our child who is a minor. Although the bill is in his name he associated my phone number with it. He has not set up a payment plan and now I am getting automated phone calls from debt collectors with my child's name mentioned. If the bill remains unpaid can this affect the credit rating of my child now or when his is 18 or will the debt remain solely with the father? Many thanks
  24. Sooo, I started my credit repair journey about a month ago and have gotten a few collections removed. I have 2 medical collections by ucb. I sent ucb collections a dv letter using whychat's process for medical collections. They sent me a letter about 2 weeks ago saying they will no longer pursue me for payment and have ordered the all 3 cra's to remove the collections. HOWEVER, its been 2 weeks since and the collections are still reporting. I should also mention that these accounts are also in dispute with the cra's and the investigation isn't finished yet. I don't know what to do. How long should it take for it to be deleted? Any advice would be great!! :-)
