  1. I was reading PsychDoc transcript and I came across some interesting info. You can DV a SL? Really? I called the CA handling my account and verbally verified that the debt was mine and that I received their dunning letter but I haven't paid. I can still DV via letter, right? If I just wait a month or two then DV? If they validate then I pay. If they can't then they go away. DId I read that right or am I just crazy? How valid is a verbal verification? It's probably too late now huh? Any advice would be appreciated. Also I filed a complaint with the ombudsman because they wouldn't start my rehab program without a "good faith" payment. I'm probably in too deep now huh?
  2. Hello All- So glad to find an active board where I might be able to get help/advice! I attempted to attend Kaplan University (Online school) 3 or so years ago- I then had to withdrawal due to medical issues (Got pregnant with twins ) Now, here's the issue- *PLEASE NOTE these are estimates of the $ amounts- I do not have the information sitting in front of me.* My tuition for the term was around $3800 - My Pell came though a few weeks into the term for $4100 - I kept calling and checking to see if it had been applied and when the remainder would be sent to me as per request- when they finally applied the $, they applied $2000 to my tuition, and then SENT THE REST BACK TO PELL. They have admitted this was an error, and should not have happened. However, since I signed a contract at the begining of the term stating I would be responsible for and amount that PELL did not cover, that I was on the hook for $1700. I appealed. They denied. I took it to the US board of education. They found in Kaplan's favor, stating that they could not overturn my contract with the institution. Kaplan has NOW bumped up what I owe them, charging me over $1000 in additional "tuition" and fees, including withdraw fees of $800, even though I was on a semester by semester contract and dropped in between semesters. Kaplan has taken this Aprox $2800 and turned it over to the board of education, who is now wanting to come after our tax return. :/ Is there any way to still fight this? Should I file a request for review and ask for a face to face hearing? Maybe in person someone will see this is NOT my fault??? If I had been the one to screw up, I would pay it- but I wan't, and they fully admit clerical error on their part! (And of course PELL does NOT give money back once returned to them ) We are a family of 5 on one modest income and rely heavily on that tax return Any advice would be appreciated!
  3. Hello, I have a loan from Rhode Island that I believe is a private loan that I've just found out that maybe in litigation. I am not sure because I have JUST come back to the country after being an expat for 2 years. I was laid off from my job 2 years ago and decided to leave the country. Those 2 years were spent not worrying about student loans or credit cards and starting a family...but now I'm back and am checking my google voice and it seems I had a call from them 7 months ago about this loan. It's for about 6K I believe, and I took it out in 2006? Is there SOL in RI...even though I am in TX? How do I find out if it's a private loan or a federal backed on? It was not a stafford or a perkins. What is my best course of action? Non of my creditors can find me, as I left and didnt leave an address (although they have my parent's address) and the number on file is a google voice.
