  1. Hey Marv, I've got a question you might have some insight in to. I got back on my feet about 4 1/2 years back when CFS bought my subprime loan on a new Nissan truck while I was stationed in Hawaii. I refi'd the loan about two years later, then sold it a year ago and paid that loan off. Now I sit with no auto loans, but bought a foreclosure just over a year ago and have racked up better than 40k in revolving and 40k in installments to repair the house. So my scores are very low 600's, and I now need a new vehicle. Even though I have 100% perfect payment history, does the heavy debt load kill my chances for an approval at the dealership? Should I be looking at subprime outlets like a Drive? Thanks!
  2. Same thing happened to me. I was pissed about having to both pay for the shipping to have it sent, when I didn't order it, and then having to pay the return shipping to send back their heavy-flowers box! So I did dispute with Amex, and what did they do? Amex sends me the copy of their Terms and Conditions (FRS) that was submitted by the merchant validating their claim. Apparently, because their website says it's an auto-ship program, they don't have to pay up. I plan to complain to the BBB as well. It was not advertised as an auto-ship program, but rather a "sample... you pay shipping."
  3. The word from the man who built the Costco/Amex co-brand about two weeks ago was "things are going very will with the co-brand, I don't see anything changing any time soon."
  4. Tried that, even after logging off and back then back on to their site. Still thinks you've pulled a report today.
  5. Same problem. This happened to me when EQ had their big "meltdown" they blamed on a power failure. I wonder what their excuse is today.
  6. We tried several angles with Chase, who was acting as the REO for the lender on a bank owned property and they would concede to anything. In the end, the only thing they paid for was the title insurance. Seems to me it depends on two things: how much the bank is losing and which bank or REO you're dealing with. Good luck.
  7. Only Lust would be jumping up and praising Amex. After the cut my limit in half, I dropped my Gold Biz, my Delta, and my Blue Cash. Now the Amex I carry is USAA. Better rates, WAY better customer service, and all from a bank that will likely never ask for a handout in order to turn around and lemonade on their customers. And as to the original poster's query, I'm pretty sure that they pull EQ like all the other GEMB products (I've got 3 of them, and they've all been positive experiences). And as to Lust (who I'm pretty sure looks nothing like the caricature that rides her signature), you'll never get an unbiased answer about anything Amex, so you're better off discarding her input. Best of luck applying, I know others have had some mixed experiences with GEMB, but my feeling is that overall they're still a decent lender, even if your score isn't "allegedly" above 800. Cheers!
  8. Wife applied before we were married, in store Oct 2007: Instant for $2k (But she was also not a member before and opened her membership that day). I applied for mine in April 2008 (already had Delta and Gold Biz) and have been a member since the 80's, and it was a wait (don't recall if it was 10 or 14 or what). Approved about 5 days later when they called to verify information. Both our apps were only one pull each on Ex. Needless to say, they do check usage at both app and when they decide to review your account, because her card was dropped to a 500.00 line since we never use her account (mine's free). They've cut my JetBlue (don't use it much) but no my Delta or my Costco. So yes, YMMV.
  9. Thanks for the answer. I have another question... I received my DD-214 in February, and finish school this month, after which I will become employed by a completely legitimate business owned by my family. What do I need to have to be prepared to provide the lender in order to qualify for VA approval? Does the service-school-employment replace the 2-year requirement?
  10. I'm curious how lenders look at your monthly debt payments. When I look at my reports, the minimum payments are way off. Some show zero or nothing, and others that reflect a zero balance show a hefty payment. For a VA loan, do they go purely off your report? Do they use a percentage of the reported revolving balances?
  11. Same thing happened to my Freedom and Amazon cards last month. Working great, then suddenly declined... "Too many new accounts in the last 12 months." Hmm, you sure didn't say that when you issued them and had the same accounts listed.
  12. Sorry to hijack your thread, but I'm in a similar boat looking at the VA loan option in the spring. I got out in March of this year and while my fiance is wrapping up grad school I'm about to start my masters. How difficult does anyone think it will be trying to get approval with a lapse in income for the year since I got out and with her just finishing her masters?
  13. I lost my Freedom completely. Called on Sunday and they said it was closed on the 16th. A little extra UT, but nothing crazy. And no explanation other than "something reported to use by the bureaus." No AA on my Amazon.com Visa though.
  14. For Corporate Cards that the company orders, unless things have changed in the last few weeks (which I doubt), then they do not factor in your credit much at all. You might have an issue if you'd screwed Amex over in the past, but I've never even heard of that happening. People with liens, bk's, etc. have all gotten those green and gold corporate cards. Cheers
  15. Yep, closed mine after 3+ years of requests to graduate. When I called their "executive" offices (not sure if that's what it's called, found the number a while back somewhere else on the board), they said they're not even considering requests to graduate, nor have they for a while (which I think could mean at least a year). Every time I requested, I got the "you'll be receiving a letter...", which always said they do not entertain requests to graduate. After a while I got fed up and that's when I called to cancel all three HSBC cards. They tried to get me to keep the Orchard Secured, but it's gone now. Then my Best Buy was a tough sell. They waived last year's and the upcoming AF and bumped it up a whopping 100.00 without even a soft (I check a few days later). She also said there is no hard and fast rule for CLIs on their other cards, so I'm planning to call them back at least every 2-3 months. If things don't go well, I too will be 100% HSBC free by the end of the year. It served its purpose well over the past 3 1/2 years, but as many have said all over this board, ask and when they say no... kick 'em to the curb. Good luck!
  16. Was it a Mastercard or store card each time?
  17. I just closed mine after nearly three years, and since my balance was zero I had the full amount (plus some interest) in my mailbox in less than 2 weeks. As for the hit... it didn't impact my score one bit, but I've picked over $100k in unsecured now, so I can't tell you in particular. When I closed, I spoke to an American instead of overseas, and threatened to cancel my other HSBC card and got an easy CLI without any pulls. My only suggestion, not sure that I'd close it with a balance reporting if you can, but someone else may have experience doing that and could report better on that.
  18. Yes, she consistently sounds like the nagging old woman neighborhoods wish would move away to pester their own children or pass on so as to avoid a constant barrage of cranky cynicism. Thanks for the article Hegemony.
  19. Generally they won't convert anything to Costco, however it also seems (mind you, this has been my personal experience and observations) that if you are a member in good standing with Amex and have a Costco membership, you pretty much guaranteed a TrueEarnings approval if you apply (phone, web or in warehouse) and they partially based your CL on your spending history with Amex. I have family that has been with the company since it's inception and he explained that it has to do with the fact that it's not at all like their other card lines, whatever that really means.
  20. Hey DT, on a side note, I'm curious how much income you used for your NFCU apps? I've got higher scores than what's in your sig and higher lines from others banks, but Navy has been tough to give CLIs so far.
  21. DT's right on about Macy's being the first, as they are inquiry sensitive (that seems to be the only thing they're sensitive about. I would definitely apply for Macy's IN-STORE, as it's been pretty much the consensus on this board that in store apps are approved far more than online (for what it's worth, I've seen JC Pennys, which is underwritten by GE Money Bank, to be even more lenient than Macy's, and also good for in store approvals. They, like Macy's, also give regular increases with good payment history of more than the minimum due, never late, etc. Mine went from 200 to 2500 in less than 12 months). Best of luck.
  22. Citi, Chase, Wells Fargo and BofA secured cards (as I think you'll find all over the board) are not easy cards to get, even though they're secured. Many will turn you away for recent collections, chargeoffs, etc. The SkyPass secured does retain it's history when you unsecure (so you gotta take an inquiry hit, big deal in the overall scheme of things), unlike the National City.
  23. Don't use HSBC/Orchard! I held a Orchard Secured card for 3 years, and for the past year they've been telling me they are not unsecuring any cards at this time (spoke with people in different division all the way up the ladder). Just closed mine to get my money back, and having gained $100k+ in fee free CCs in the past 12 months, I'm glad to be rid of HSBC. Personally, I prefer US Bank (if not in one of their areas, you can get the Korean Air SkyPass from them, secured).
  24. I dumped them today. I held my Orchard secured card with 1,500 in it for three years, and in the last 12 months requested three times to graduate, each time getting a form letter saying they don't do manual reviews to graduate and they automatically review. Well, after 3 calls and no progress (other than a supervisor finally located stateside who said they are NOT unsecuring / graduating secured cards at this time), I pulled my account and almost canceled my Best Buy MC, but they sucked me back in by waiving the AF and giving a CLI. I've added over $100k this year, all with no fees and the loss of HSBC is less than 2% of my trade lines. Good riddance Orchard!
  25. I used to use Stamps.com. Never had any problems, and yes you can do certified and return receipt (pick up a handful of the forms at the post office), which you can't do on USPS.com (doesn't allow 1st class letters). Now I use a meter from Pitney Bowes, which is more expensive than the <5.00 a month for Stamps.com, but for me it's been worth it. Also, look around the internet, you can usually find Stamps.com offers that include 25-50.00 in free postage, a free 5lb digital scale, and some free labels when you sign up. Another option if you just don't want to wait in line, the APC (not installed at all post offices) does offer Certified and Return receipt when you use it (requires a credit or debit card) and will even print most of the forms for you (you have to add your own address info on the green card still, so bring a pen). Like I said, I like stamps.com and you can drop your certified/return receipt mail right in the mailbox.
