My wife started college and shortly into it we ran out of funds because my job started cutting hours and such. We contacted everyone that she wouldn't be able to attend until I found a better job. The school had no problem with that. He only student loan was with sallie mae, and since she didn't attend for very long it was only a couple thousand. I have recently graduated college and have about 17,000 in loans that I am paying back so I can't just pay her's off. We noticed on one statement that Sallie Mae was continueing to send money to the school. I called them about it, and they told me to call the school. The school returned the money promptly. After calling the school to confirm the return of the money I called sallie mae to confirm that they would send me a new statemnt with the reconfigured balance and payment schedule. I got the OK from them about it so while I was waiting on that to come in the mail my state opened up for the annual free credit report. My wife and I checked ours out. The only negative on both of ours was her sallie mae loan reporting us 30 days late. What is the best way to go about getting this taken care of by sallie mae and by the CRAs?

Is your wifes loan officially in deferment?? Did she defer it in a timely manner?? Payments become due 6 months after she ceases being a full time student.

No her loans weren't in defferement, which we didn't find out until we got the first bill in. The financial aid people at her college explained it one way, and then when I called to ask about it I got another answer. I am just wondering what the best way to deal with them would be so that they can take it off the credit report that I am 30 days late.

Thanks for the response. good.gif

It is standard for all federal loans to come due 6 months after seperation from school...it would have been identical with your loans. It comes down it to it is the students responsiblity to contact the loan holder to file deferments...the school is out of the picture if she is no longer in school. Sallie Mae are sticklers and it is not likely that you will get the 30 day late off.

krazed - no guarantees, but have you tried contacting SallieMae and making a goodwill request? Some people have had success with that route. Definitely post back and let us know what you did and your results.
