Anyone ever work with an ombudsmen to help negotiate a reasonable monthly payment with the CA to collect on a delinquent student loan?
A week ago I received a call from a CA telling me I had to put almost 3K down and pay close to $400 a month or they will garnish my wages. I told them I can’t afford what they quoted me, not even if I got a second job, and they said it was my only option or garnished wages. With advice from here I negotiated to less down and less a month but I still cant come up with the down payment and with the monthly payment they quoted me I can afford but it will leave me with between $10-$20 to live off of a month. But what I found funny was when I was negotiation with the manager at collections based on something I said her response was: “with no money down it would be this much a month” Funny because she kept telling me a down payment was REQUIRED and the amount she quoted me with the no money down was only $9. less than if I was to put almost 1k down. I called her on this money down required and no money down thing and she said she misspoke and its required that I put money down. So because of her slip up and other reps at this collections place giving me very different and mixed information I called the ombudsmen office and they are looking into either all of this info or just getting my monthly payment down and getting back to me but I just don’t know if this is all a joke or if they really have helped negotiate in the past. Anything anyone can share would be greatly appreciated.

My only experiences with the Ombudsman's office were very positive, but they were limited to identity theft of students and not collections. Most of the posts I have read in this thread reflect the same positive experience.

Keep in mind that the CA's you are dealing with are actually approved contractors of the Dept of Ed and won't blow off the Ombudsman's office inquiry so easily. They want to keep that contract.
