I know this application seems a bit strange. I was just curious about what I might expect from a lender when I buy a car. I don't anticipate getting a car loan before I graduate from medical school, which will be in about 3 1/2 years. I just want to know what to expect. I've never had a car loan before. I've only had a used car bought with cash. I don't think I'll have much of a down payment because I will just have started my internship. I anticipate having about 170,000 in student loans and expect my credit utilization to be the same. I realize that I am projecting far into the future, but I wanted to know if I would need a cosigner because of my lack of car loan history. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to improve my application?

About my credit history: My scores are from November 2004. I asked my Dad to make me an authorized user on his 30yr old AMEX charge card. I wanted a longer credit history and was hoping for a boost in my scores. Will this help my application for the loan, or does it not matter? In addition, does the credit limit of the revolving accounts make a difference for the application, or only for overall utilization in relation to the credit score?

Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate the information you provide on this forum.

At that time I believe you could successfully use one of the College Grad programs then being offered.

They are usually assumptively approved provided there is no disqualifying credit criteria.

Thank you for your response. If I remember correctly, this approval does not influence the APR of the loan, only how likely it is that I will be approved. Will this program offset the fact that I have a limited down payment? If the manufacturer is still offering rebates, will this help with down payment issues? Sorry for asking these questions as you must answer them on a regular basis, but I am not as familiar with the college graduate programs.

Forgot to say......Welcome to creditboards!

College grad programs provided there are no disqualifying credit criteria are approved at a specific tier. The tier is determined by the lender offering the program.

They usually approve up to MSRP plus tax, tag, title, fees etc.

In addition, there is usually a college graduate cash rebate usually offered on NEW vehicles.

At the time you apply, if there are additional rebates in place you would likewise qualify to recieve them within the program guidelines.
