I've got two way-old defaulted SLs, one for $5k and one for $15k, both through US Dept of Ed. I just entered into a rehab program for both. Right now I've got 6 trade lines on my credit reports, showing "collection accounts;" all have my S.S.# as account numbers. How do I get these deleted--or, at least, get them so they show ONE $5k loan and ONE $15k loan?
Are all 6 trade lines from the DofE, or from other entities? When you look at the details of each (like date opened, high balance, etc.), can you see a correlation between them? Do some look like duplicates? Do they list just your SS # as the acct #, or do they have an extension at the end (like -01, -02, etc.)
It is typical for student loans to show up multiple times. Each tradeline represents a disbursement. So if you received one check per semester, by the time you graduated, that would equal 8 tradelines (or more if you took longer than 4 years... lol).
If you default and they get sold to another servicer or sent to a CA, then each tradeline gets repeated. Do a search here - some folks have had more than 30 tradelines per report because of this.
