Does anyone know about these companies out there that say they can help save you from foreclosure? An example of that would be Debt solutions of america or a law firm saying tthey can help you save your house.

Be very, very wary of foreclosure rescue organizations. There many variations on foreclosure assistance frauds out there, and it's not uncommon for them to charge you a hefty fee, promise to take care of everything, and then disappear -- leaving you without your cash AND without your home. In some cases they even get people to sign over their home titles.

There are, however, some good guys out there. Sometimes these are funded by mortgage banks, but can help you wade through the legalese and red tape for low or no cost.

Lots of info here in the Debt Consolidation, Counseling and Management section, especially the last three topics in the Pinned section at the top.

I work for a mortgage services company. Why pay someone to do what you can do? You could be paying that towards the loan. They do everything a borrower does nothing different. I would say your money and do it yourself. Now there are some non-profit ones out there -- those arn't so bad. Just make sure to keep update with what's going on and don't be afarid to call your servicer and ask them what's going on with your HAMP mod.
