Full Version: Unauthorized surcharge... what does MasterCard do other than send letters?

Stuff like this is VERY common in bars. Despite reports, the signs don't get turned down.

Unfortunately many consumers are unaware this isn't permitted and usually orders come above the minimum, so they really don't have a chance to have a tension.

What exactly does MasterCard do other than send them a "someone said you were adding surcharge, oh, you can't do that" letter?

if it happens in my state someone could go to jail its a class b misdemeanor to add a surcharge to a credit card transaction. also you can report it to your card issuer and more than likely they can refund the whole charge if you wanted.

NO MINIMUM ON A CREDIT CARD

NO MAXIMUM ON A CREDIT CARD

**NO FEE TO USE A CREDIT CARD**

NO ID ON A SIGNED CREDIT CARD

My guess is that by the time the patron is finished AND tips the barstaff, the charge is NOT under $10.

My next guess is that few people have true standing in the eyes of MC unless that customer has actually been assessed the surcharge...

After reporting to MasterCard, some merchant I report make changes -- sign comes down, they stop saying it's the bosses rule. In others I see no change at all - One place I must have reported 10 times still has thier sign up and seems to me that the owners per thier behaviour have never seen a letter or gotten a fine. I wonder if it has to do with the fact if the charges are processed over the MA network or not, or if they actually display a MA logo in the window. Seems odd to make that a stipulation.

I think it is harder get the ones who don't post signs as it is your word for the cashier's word.
