It is currently reporting as a paid collection.
Oh, to add a little more complexity/frustration to the matter....in DW's efforts to help, she sent a goodwill email to the CA on my behalf. I know why, as we had talked about how GW might help with another non-medical issue we had.
Will this void the steps we are about to take?
Also, I don't mind sending the letter you linked, but with me knowing who the OC and CA is....am I doing something wrong here? I am guessing it needs done to establish a firm written link of relationship. I just want to make sure I won't get in trouble is all.
Here is the email...

I will try to be as concise as possible in my email request to you. The reason for my writing is to ask for a gesture of goodwill on behalf of your firm.
A few years ago I apparently had a medical debt with St. Francis hospital. I was unaware of the debt, and requested validation because I was under the assumption my insurance had paid. Long story short, I was responsible. After realizing this was my debt and I was indeed responsible, I made payment in full to your firm to settle up the monies owed.
Fast forward to today, and I am in the process of trying to secure a home for my family; however, I am having difficulty because this collection shows on my credit report and is still having a negative effect on my credit score. It does show as paid, but I have been advised complete removal would help enable me to get approved for a mortgage.
The above in mind, I am respectfully asking you show an act of goodwill towards me and my family and delete this collection account from my credit report. I do realize you have no legal obligation to do so, I am just asking for some help. The lesson has been hard learned and I would like to clean this up and move on with my life.
Your help & generosity in the matter would be most appreciated. I do look forward to hearing from you soon regarding the matter. Thank you.
There is NO SUCH THING as "good will" from a CA. All the letter did was likely INCREASE the chances of the account staying on your reports , ESPECIALLY if it was SIGNED by the PATIENT, plus your names will be added to the data miners "sucker list".
It is more than probable that the reporting CA had NO authority to collect or report on the account.
Yes you KNOW who the OC was on your original bill, but do you KNOW, through DOCUMENTATION that the reporting CA has that data??
The issue is not and never is the legitimacy of any original bill, it is the legitimacy of the reporting CA that the HIPAA program calls into question.
Follow the instructions.
