Strange the same companies that forbid them in the U.S. want ID checks there.

I've used credit cards in over 15 countries and only in the U.S. have I EVER been asked for ID (except for checking into a hotel which would usually require ID regardless of payment method)

Quite possibly, the banks are not aware of MC and Visa rules. It seems that many people are not.
