Full Version: Gas Stations with Cash Price and Credit Price

I just went by another gas station here that, for about the past year and a half, was charging more for credit than cash with both prices posted on a sign. I was by there tonight and they have stopped doing this and now have the same price for cash or credit. That is now three gas stations in my area that tried to have a different price for cash than credit and have stopped.

I now know of only two (out of at least a hundred) stations in my area that charge more for credit fuel than cash fuel.

Must not be such a great business decision.

THE ONE PLACE THAT TRIED THAT SCAM WENT OUT OF BUSINESS LAST YEAR

THEIR SO-CALLED "CASH DISCOUNT PRICE" WAS HIGHER THAT ALL THE OTHER STATIONS "CREDIT" PRICE

(cash-credit same price)

TAX DEDUCTABLE COST OF DOING BUSINESS

Discount for "CASH" is NEVER the exact correct price (they don't do the MATH to the $0.01)

the station I go to the most has 5 cents off for cash or sucky debit cards. too bad I get more CASHBACK using a CREDITCARD not to mention with a credit card I am not risking my deposit accounts.

The one very small place (like 4 pumps and a very small store) that "WAS" cash only went to taking credit cards and it is always busy...WENT THAT WAY A FEW YEARS AGO AND ALWAYS HAVE CARS AT THE PUMPS and IN THE PARKING LOT

Years ago they only had 2 employee's cars in the lot and I NEVER saw anybody getting gas

As far as I know we are 100% CREDIT CARD COMPLIANT in the city

It has long been a practice to charge less on fuel when paid by cash...gas stations on the other hand, have toyed with the practice off and on. Yes, to some people there IS a difference between FUEL and GAS. Ever try to run a diesel on gas?

Or perhaps it became an issue with secondary concerns, to include employee indiscretions or increased risks of robbery. I know in the smaller towns outside of Austin, they do far more cash business when the dual pricing structure is in place.

Never seen one in recent years that couldn't do the math properly...the pumps were digital and you indicated whether you were paying cash or credit, at which time it would enter the appropriate price per gallon before you started pumping. Thus, if the cash price is being done wrong, then so to is the credit price. And I don't remember the last time I actually saw a manual pump in use at any sort of a high-volume outlet. I do see them in use with some of the slave pumps and occasionally with the tanks for the off-road diesel (taxed differently).

How does this "EXTRA" cash get to the bank

Making deposits of CASH does have a cost

The cash does not get counted for free (more than once)

The cash does not drive to the bank for free

Some banks even charge for business account cash deposits

We won't even talk about the extra money need to be kept at the business for change

$0.01--->$0.05--->$0.10--->$0.25--->$1.00--->$5.00--->$10.00--->$20.00

Ok so I talked about it

How much interest is being made on all that change

I'm sure it gets there the same way as regular cash transactions would get there...there will (hopefully) never BE a cash-free society, and as such, there will ALWAYS be a need for deposits.

A SMART business owner would not be doing business with such a bank. Very few LOCAL banks have such idiotic practices, although I would not put it beyond a BofA or similar national mega-bank.
