PHEAA/AES (Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance/American Education) is currently garnishing 15% of my pay biweekly. Is it possible to call and enter a rehab program? or will they deny me since they are already getting money from me?
Saria
You can rehab, but your payments will have to be in addition to the amount currently being garnished.

Wait, say they are garnishing a total of $400/month ($200/paycheck). I will have to pay them $400+/month????????????

I know that's what you mean, I'm just flabergasted cuz I can't afford that but want to get into good standing with them.
Saria
I don't know the amount they'd require for rehab payments. You'd have to work that out with them. But, yes, it will be in addition to the $400 per month they're garnishing now.

From the sounds of your other thread, they haven't started garnishment yet. Start the rehab ASAP and you can avoid this.

ETA: Never mind, I just read further back and saw that you do have another loan that's already in garnishment. All you can do is give them a call and see if you can work out a rehab payment that's manageable. Good luck! Hopefully, you'll be able to avoid garnishment on your other loan so you aren't in this position twice.

That was a Sallie Mae thread which I've already started a Rehab program with yesterday. This is for a Stafford loan which went to garnishment a year ago. I was hoping to get into good status with AES concerning my Stafford loan in hopes to clean up my reports via rehab programs. But I guess I will just continue the garnishment since I DEFINITELY can not afford more than the 400 they are currently taking out. cray.gif

Ok, just got off of the phone with them. It is going to cost me an additional $85/month = $42.50/paycheck. For 9 months of $42.50/paycheck to clean up my credit with them and possibly lower my payments afterwards, I felt that was a good deal. So I just entered rehab with them. Looks like i'm going to have to starve myself a night or two a week now. wink.gif

January, I hope to have both student loans in good standings...... wish me luck! Thanks for your help.

clapping.gif I'm glad you were able to work something out! And even though things might be tight for a while, just think of how nice it will be to get out from under that garnishment!!

It feels good to not be afraid of collections anymore and finally grow up after running for four years from my loans. I know nine months will fly by once the holidays come and go.... and after that it's just a matter of May coming around.

I'm paying Sallie Mae $200/month (isn't bad at all), and then after the rehab program it will lower since I'm currently paying interest/day. With all of this said and done, my dreams of getting a house a year from now are still possible.....

A little more than $600/month for nine months is tight but you are correct, I will spend every nite dreaming of those payments dwindling. sad.gif

Thanks again Saria!
