Cool, I'm glad you saw that before you picked up the phone to call them.
Our board guru, WhyChat, has perfected a process to get rid of medical collections and pay the original healthcare provider (hcp) if they are still legitimately owed. Basically, for right now, we don't know for sure which this is going to be - a CA "penny on the dollar" debt, or an account still owned by the HCP but contracted through a CA for collections.
So, having said all of that - the hipaa process will allow you to find out, and figure out which way to go.
First, get your reports from annualcreditreport.com if you haven't already, to make sure you have the best info. available (3-in-1's aren't the same).
Opt out of promotional inquiries - this will help keep any new trolls from showing up.
Get old addresses deleted.
Then send this:
http://whychat.5u.com/hipaadisp.html to any credit reporting agency (cra) where this is showing.
This is a
magic little letter - frequently the collections get deleted and that's the end of it.
And bookmark this thread so that you can come back here for more help/advice down the line. (I have a thread around here somewhere that explains a bit more - titled something like "New? Quick and dirty advice" that you might want to find & read.)
