Full Version: Want to turn variable-rate private student loans into fixed rate
CreditBoards > Financing > Student Loans

My wife has a significant amount of money owed in student loans. She has them in private varying-rate loans to American Education Services.

The rates used to be much higher, but now they're really low. I'd like to lock in at the low rates right now. How do I "refinance" private student loans at a fixed rate? AES says they are not offering consolidation of private student loans now. I've seen a number of lenders who will consolidate private student loans but only at variable rates.

Who should I go to, and what should I ask for?

The last I heard, most private SL refinancing had dried up, especially in terms of fixed rates. And even when fixed rates were available they were at least 8%.

Keep the variable rates for now - they will probably stay low for a while. Then, when the credit market resurfaces you can always look for a new lender.

Thank you.
