My wife and I had some rough times and could not pay on her student loans. Over the 7 years she and I have done nothing the interest has now made the loans go up to about $50,000! I need to start paying on this and taking care of it. No idea who to call or where to start. Do I call these people, mail them or what? How much do I pay or how do I work this out with them? Well credit solutions and midland have nothing to do with your student loans.

First step would be to call USA Funds....they would have paid the claim to Citibank. You might also want to log into NSLDS to double check who is holding them first.

Call...do not mail.

Ok so I called USA Funds and got the following information, please let me know what I should do next.

So if I pay all this off right now it would be $35,334.62 total (shiet) which I can't do all at once of course. So they told me I had three other options and they are the following......

Option A
Consolidate the total loan with new payment schedule

Option B
Rehabilitation the loan, making 9 month payments in time. Then credit on my report would then go back to normal.

Option C
Gain title for eligibility, make additional loans and go back to school after 6 payments, credit will go back to normal.

However to get more details on these options they said I must contact the Collection Agency "Enterprise Recovery Systems - 1-800-377-1904"

Really since you cannot pay in full , you only have two options...rehab or consolidate. The regaining financial aid eligibility goes hand and hand with the rehab.

With rehab, your USA tradelines will change to paid as agreed. Citibank will not change. Standard payment for the rehab will be about $350...note....no down payment is required to qualify for rehab. If you cannot afford the $350 payment, under the Higher Education Act you are entitled to reasonable and affordable payments based on your household income/expenses. You will probably want to consolidate later down the line after the rehab has been completed.

Consolidation is the other option and I would recommend the Direct Loan Program with the USDOE.

Thanks Lynn and I should call the credit collector directly and not mail them about this? Would a consolidation or rehab be better for getting this paid off with the least amount of interest and money owed? Also which is better for the credit report? Thanks again!!

Egads. I could not read through that wall of text. What was the original student loan debt? You should not have to pay seven years of interest. Negotiate with them on the final amount before you go to rehab. I've seen lenders cave all the way down to the original debt level, just because they want there hands on the money rather than a BK.

Sorry, I see it now. I'd try to get it down to the original 22k. That debt collection cost is a bunch of BS. There are in the debt collection business. Remember this: they want your money. And any money out of you is better than no money at all. Though it may surprise you, you are the one in the position of strength. You got the money they want. Play hardball with them and get it in writing.

Just so you know, I bet they actually bought that debt for about $2000 and the rest is all profit to them.

Sorrry...this is a FEDERAL loan. They are NOT sold to CA's. NO SOL and NO BK. They will not negotiate for rehab nor will they settle for the orginate principal. The collection fees are federally mandated.

The faster you pay them off, the less interest you will pay. There is no prepayment penalty.
