If the system and the dollar collapse you can still barter with the silver and at least buy bread. Even the Bible says everyone should have a little silver on hand. As far as Silver being metal, this is true but so is gold and thats what the US dollar is backed with at FT Knox. So paper money or travelers check have no more value than the other. But if the travelers checks are stolen or destroyed I can have them replaced and you can't say the same for a dollar bill.
What are you a time traveler from 1908? No country in the world backs up their currency with precious metals anymore. Every country has long since dropped its supposed gold-standard.
Anyway, you're not talking about a safe haven for cash savings, you're talking about survivalist planning in case civilization collapses. God knows how much money people have wasted preparing for the end that never comes, but, OK -- if it makes you feel better.
But instead of buying silver you should buy toilet paper. Don't know why people don't mention that, but when the balloon goes up and everything falls apart and the paper factories shut down, my toilet paper will be worth a LOT more than your silver.
Besides, I'm not going to barter for your silver. I'm going to shoot you and help myself to your silver. And any toilet paper you still have around your double-wide.
