I agree with not wanting to show ID, but I agree it's hardly the big hairy deal that some make it out to be.

Cashiers don't take it upon themselves to check ID, they are told to do it. Why get snippy with someone who is following the policy of their employer? If you feel the need to protest, ask for a manager (and please, step out of line and let other people check out).
Some actually do take it upon themselves. Also don't neglect the person that may want to know the address of that cool new car stereo you just bought.
Totally agree about not wasting other's time, though. That's just rude.
