I TOLD THE C.S.M. RESPONDING TO VOID THE SALE

Ask the bank for a new card AND SIGN THE COTTIN' PICKIN' BACK AS YOU ARE TOLD TO DO

I wish more places of business would crack down hard like the post office does and have a big sign stating the policy-and stick to what's on the sign.

Then we'd get fewer fools like this.

What do you mean by that?

Merchant acceptance rules say that they need to present the id AND sign the back of the card before the sale can be completed. If they don't sign the back, no sale.

Dealing with unsigned cards

If the signature panel is left blank...

1. Request a signature. Ask the cardholder to sign the card and provide current government identification, such as a driver's license or passport (if local law permits).

2. Check the signature. Be sure that the cardholder signature on the transaction receipt matches the one on the card and the additional identification.

3. Complete the transaction. If the signatures appear reasonably the same and the authorization request is approved, continue the transaction. If the cardholder refuses to sign the card, do not accept the card.

If the card has a “See ID” in place of a signature…

1. Request a signature. Ask the cardholder to sign the card and provide current government identification, such as a driver's license or passport (if local law permits).

2. Check the signature. Be sure that the signature on the card matches the one on the transaction receipt and the additional identification.

If the signatures appear reasonably the same and the authorization request is approved, go ahead and complete the transaction.

So basically, all of your sound and fury about "educating cashiers" and not standing for "illegal" violations of credit card company policy is pure BS? You follow the policy your management dictates just like everyone else.

I know of other retailers who have it in their policies to accept unsigned cards too.

The retailer can do whatever they want in terms of what cards they accept. Accept an unsigned card. Accept a card over the phone. Hand key a card number that is written on the back of a bar napkin with the expiration date and the security code. Allow someone to state a card number over the phone (customer not present, card not present). I've seen all of this stuff happen in my time. Stunning. Unbelieveable. And some store managers wonder why there is fraud, when they authorize stuff like this? They are aware of the risk of accepting these void, unsigned cards, and do it anyway so they don't piss off the half of their customers who show up with unsigned or "See ID" cards. The few retailers who take a stand on this issue don't seem to make a difference.

GEORGE
The business wants to make the sale

The UN-EDUCATED C.I.D. FOOLS get to show ID

It would be better if they just signed the card as the credit card company wants you to

I even had a cashier today tell me that 2 COPS TOLD HER TO PUT C.I.D.

I told her that there are just a little CLULESS

You lose the UN-SIGNED CARD...the credit card company doesn't have to pay for FRAUD

It is just a few FOOLS a day...eventually maybe all of them will become EDUCATED

I am not worried about anything. In fact this may be more climax inducing than cash. Nothing like seeing a bombastic hypocrite called out...

I don't think that is uncommon. People activate the little buggers and forget to sign them before putting them in their wallets. laugh.gif

Even when you DO sign them, sometimes it rubs off.

I had a debit card do that to me once-it wouldn't hold a signature no matter what I did. Which was odd, because I've had cards from that bank before and after that one that were fine.

I was so emberassed the first time I tried to use it when the cashier told me it was unsigned. I was, of course, nice to the cashier and I thought maybe I really had forgotten to sign it, but when I took her pen and went to sign it, I could see a few smudges from the ink I'd used. I re-signed it, of course, and apologized profusely.

I took the card out of my wallet that evening, and what do you know? The signature was gone again, leaving only a few smudges. I signed the card again, with a thicker pen, and left it out overnight to dry before putting it back in my wallet.

What happened the next time I tried to use the card? The cashier said she was sorry, she'd have to see my ID, because while she could tell I'd signed the card, the signature had gotten blurred and was illegible. I apologized again for the inconvience and showed my ID.

I signed that stupid thing literally a dozen times, with probably 6 different kinds of pen. But it got to the point where I would pull out my ID along with my card and say "This card doesn't like to hold my signature, so if it's too blurry for you to accept, that's okay, I have my ID".

One kind cashier suggested I use a sharpie, and I was going to do that, but I only had the big ones and before I could find a small one to buy, the magnetic strip mercifully died and I had to request a new card. I signed that one with a regular pen...and everything was just fine with it.

So, sometimes these things just happen, I guess. And in those cases, I have no problem with being asked for ID. But when the signature is obvious and clear...that's a problem.

My signature on my license was generated MORE than 15 years ago (mail renewal)

No credit card I have was signed more than 3 years ago
