Here is what happened. My mother was planning on buying a gift card online. She was about to purchase the card. Then it said it required her birth date and Social Security number. When she clicked on why. It said they need it for ID. Which I know was incorrect. She never made that purchase.

I do not think they should require SS# for online purchase of gift card or for any type of online purchase. Given you ss# online could possible lead to ID theft.

If you go to the mall and buy it there, they do not require a SS number.

Duh, I know that. However, we do not have a mall that close. Also, they will only let you purchase with cash not credit card. That was not my point anyways. My point is you should not have to give out your SS# for any giftcard purchases for ID online or in person. Now, if they need it for the patriot act as some places claim, your drivers license number should be fine for that purpose. Simon mall never claimed it was for the Patriot Act.

Interesting. The time I bought one of those gift cards, they accepted a credit card. They were one of the few places in recent memory that appeared to compare my signature on the back of the card with what I signed on the receipt.

No LAW says they have to ask for SS#

Technically, the Patriot Act does. Look it up. It suppose to keep money from falling into the wrong hands. However, we better not get in a debate about this because it may be considered political.

Drivers license PROVES who I am

My SS card says IT IS NOT FOR ID PURPOSES

...and this purchase was for a COTTIN' PICKIN' GIFT CARD

I never implied that Simon mall requested the SS# because of the Patriot Act, they requested because they wanted id. The reason, I know this my mother clicked on why they need a birthdate and SS number, it said for ID purposes. She did not order the gift card. She is like me and that is where she draws the line, given out a social security number.

You are mixing up my comments. I meant other places require the SS# for purchase of gift cards Not Simon Mall. The reason the other places use is the Patriot Act. This is the first time we heard of a company saying the Social Security Number and birthday was used for ID purposes. I was just do a comparison.

Me and my mother restrict access to SS# we will only give it out when necessary.

SS# has NEVER been required for any GIFT CARD I have ever bought

...and I have spent more than 5 figures on GIFT CARDS

The only time you would have to have a SS# is if you were STUPID ENOUGH TO USE CASH

Yeah, you are right.

Hey George look at this website.

Yes you are right the act does not require them to use the SS# they can if they want too, but should use other options.
