So I've run into something interesting here in San Antonio. The local Pizza Huts have sign stating that a valid photo ID is required for the use of a credit card. I saw this after I ordered online when I arrived to pickup my pizza. Knowing the merchant rules I refused to show ID when asked. As expected they refused to complete the transaction. Since I was hungry I decided to go along with their demands and I told them that I would be filing a complaint.
I've done this three times at the same store and each time I've filed a complaint online with Mastercard. Later I went to another PizzaHut in the area and I talked to the manager there about the rules. Where it gets interesting is that this manager told me that their lawyers had called Mastercard and they had been told that they were allowed to demand one piece of ID. They said that they were told that they couldn't require a drivers license and social security card or something like that.
She was being nice so I kept myself from laughing when she made the suggestion that somebody might be required to show more ID for a Pizza then I did when I bought my house.

It does make me wonder how many times a complaint has to be made before Mastercard does something. The other possibility is that Mastercard just doesn't care about their rules.

The CREDIT CARD COMPANIES (VISA/MC) make the rules...not the business

I was asked once at PIZZA HUT...I said NO

I still got the pizza

What are they going to do...trash the pizza???

What are they going to do...a CREDIT REFUND or a VOID???

THE CARD IS SIGNED...LOOK AT THE BACK OF THE CARD...LOOK AT THE SIGNATURE SLIP

I have NEVER been asked for ID at PAPA JOHNS

With places who ID me for any kind of prepared item, I will refuse to show ID. If they have a problem, I will leave and go somewhere else. Let them throw the prepared item away. Fine by me. If I had prepaid, and they refused to provide a refund, I'd be doing a chargeback.

I've had a couple places give me the item free rather than run my credit card without seeing ID. I don't understand that logic at all, but, okay.

PENNY WISE~DOLLAR FOOLISH

Somebody said that they went to some store and bought something under $1.00 and they also got the item for free

MICRO-MANAGE the tax deductable fee

Another poster said that a business told them some times they are better off "IF" the customer doesn't pay for the small stuff (I assume under $0.50) than put it on a credit card

(as if THEFT is better)

MICRO-MANAGE the tax deductable fee

They said that they were told that they couldn't require a drivers license and social security card or something like that.

CREDIT CARD SIGNATURE IS ALL THE ID NEEDED

When you pay for merchandise with a Visa card, MasterCard, or American Express any store that accepts these cards should accept yours too, no questions asked. It's part of the deal that merchants agree to when they become participating members.

They must check your signature and the card - electronically or by telephone - to be sure it's valid. Once the answer comes up yes, they can go ahead and charge. They can't ask you for any further identification - not a license plate number, Social Security number, proof of address, phone number or picture ID.

Your personal ID isn't needed because Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all guarantee payment on cards that have been properly checked. If the issuer mistakenly authorizes a sale on a bad card, it should make good. MasterCard says that merchants receive instant settlement.

Unfortunately, not all merchants play by the rules. Some, apparently, haven't read them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

MasterCard wants to hear about merchants who break their rules. Send the name and address and an account of what happened to MasterCard WorldWide 2000 Purchase St. Purchase, NY 10577. The merchant's bank will get a stiff letter, ordering it to investigate and bring the offending store into line - or pay a $2,000 fine.

Visa enforces the same rules as MasterCard. "When we hear about a violation, we ask the bank that signed the merchant to get together with the merchant and see that the practice is stopped," Visa representative states. To report a merchant, send a letter to the bank that that issued your Visa card or call 1-800-VISA-911.

American Express also prohibits merchants from asking for IDs. "All a merchant is supposed to do is take an imprint, make sure the signature matches and swipe the card through the terminal, to get authorization."

If Pizza Hut wants my ID more than my business, they will get NEITHER and I will find my pizza someplace else (and probably get better food too.)

I've bought baseball tickets online and just walked up to the stadium and showed them the credit card I used to pay for the tickets with.

Ah. I missed that. In my case, they made it clear that you had to show the same card that was used to make the purchase.

That is kind of bad if you lose your card or it gets stolen before the game.

Yeah. One time I made the purchase about 4 months before and almost left home without the card... and it was a six hour drive. I was actually walking out the door when I remembered and had to go back in the house and get it as I usually only carried a few cards at a time and rotated them.

no...what is worse than losing your credit card, is when you board an airplane and forget your Drivers License, thus not enabling you to rent the car that you reserved. mad.gif

Asking for you to show the card (making it a card-present sale) is fine... asking for ID is not.
