So I've run into something interesting here in San Antonio. The local Pizza Huts have sign stating that a valid photo ID is required for the use of a credit card. I saw this after I ordered online when I arrived to pickup my pizza. Knowing the merchant rules I refused to show ID when asked. As expected they refused to complete the transaction. Since I was hungry I decided to go along with their demands and I told them that I would be filing a complaint.
I've done this three times at the same store and each time I've filed a complaint online with Mastercard. Later I went to another PizzaHut in the area and I talked to the manager there about the rules. Where it gets interesting is that this manager told me that their lawyers had called Mastercard and they had been told that they were allowed to demand one piece of ID. They said that they were told that they couldn't require a drivers license and social security card or something like that.
She was being nice so I kept myself from laughing when she made the suggestion that somebody might be required to show more ID for a Pizza then I did when I bought my house.
It does make me wonder how many times a complaint has to be made before Mastercard does something. The other possibility is that Mastercard just doesn't care about their rules.
