Another example of this stupid, pointless, ID checking.

Never show ID for signed credit card purchases.

No ID required for signed credit card purchases. Merchants cannot require ID.

Albertsons Southern California Division Credit Card Acceptance Policy:

Ask for ID on the following transactions:

1. Over $100
2. Gift card of any amount is being purchased within transaction

If ID is not available, they are to compare the signature on the back of the card with the signature on the receipt. If signatures do not match, they are not to complete the transaction.

Sounds like the cashier followed the policy, but the manager sort of blew it by approving the transaction.

CREDIT CARD SIGNATURE IS ALL THE ID NEEDED

When you pay for merchandise with a Visa card, MasterCard, or American Express any store that accepts these cards should accept yours too, no questions asked. It's part of the deal that merchants agree to when they become participating members.

They must check your signature and the card - electronically or by telephone - to be sure it's valid. Once the answer comes up yes, they can go ahead and charge. They can't ask you for any further identification - not a license plate number, Social Security number, proof of address, phone number or picture ID.

Your personal ID isn't needed because Visa, MasterCard, and American Express all guarantee payment on cards that have been properly checked. If the issuer mistakenly authorizes a sale on a bad card, it should make good. MasterCard says that merchants receive instant settlement.

Unfortunately, not all merchants play by the rules. Some, apparently, haven't read them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

MasterCard wants to hear about merchants who break their rules. Send the name and address and an account of what happened to MasterCard WorldWide 2000 Purchase St. Purchase, NY 10577. The merchant's bank will get a stiff letter, ordering it to investigate and bring the offending store into line - or pay a $2,000 fine.

Visa enforces the same rules as MasterCard. "When we hear about a violation, we ask the bank that signed the merchant to get together with the merchant and see that the practice is stopped," Visa representative states. To report a merchant, send a letter to the bank that that issued your Visa card or call 1-800-VISA-911.

American Express also prohibits merchants from asking for IDs. "All a merchant is supposed to do is take an imprint, make sure the signature matches and swipe the card through the terminal, to get authorization."

I find this hillarious, because I used my amex at WalMart for a 7 dollar purchase earlier today and they asked for ID.

Later this evening I went to Stater Bros. a grocery store here in Southern California and bought 133 dollars in groceries (liquor included, and I am 20), on the same AMEX card, yet they never asked for ID.

Stater Brothers knows what the merchant rules are and doesn't feel like hassling their customers. They also know the underage decoy that the cops send in to see if the store is checking ID for alcohol when young looking people buy liquor doesn't spend 30 minutes accumulating a cart of many other items to go along with the liquor.

What is the location of this Wal Mart? Do they require you to show ID every time you go with a credit card?

It's time to find out if we can get a different response. Continental - do you have anything new to ad? The same old response time after time is getting very old.

Stater Bros. should have asked you for ID for the liquor (regardless of payment method... if you are using cash they should ID for that).

Wal-Mart should not have ID's unless you were getting alcohol/tobacco/fireworks/psuphedrine/spray paint etc
