I have been reading that people who previously consolidated student loans with places like Sallie Mae and intend to take part in the public servant loan forgiveness law can not reconsolidate in the gov't direct loan program.

I know that Sallie Mae currently lets spouses consolidate loans together which we have not done. Our loans are currently in deferrment his loans total $43000 and mine total $23000. Should we consolidate these together and then enroll in the public servant program or will consolidating them together exclude us from the program?

DH just started a job with the state working for public assistance and intends to stay a very long time.

Just wondering if we would benefit more from the program if we consolidated our loans together and then enrolled in the program. Would both our loans be forgiven after the ten years?

There is no such thing as spousal consolidation anymore. They were terminated about 2 years ago.

Thanks, I had already read that.

Other sites are stating that borrowers with Sallie Mae Loans seeking the Public Servant Forgiveness can re-consolidate into the Direct Loan program.

The link referenced above does not state that.
