I had a credit union account that I enjoyed that is now closed and I want re-opened in good standing. While out of state, a hotel where I stayed made two large fraudulent charges to my bank card. I had stayed at this place before, and on that visit, I had used my bank card to pay for my room.
On this stay, which was a few weeks, I paid cash in person. I had also been given a $200 or $300 credit to my bill due to bed bugs and was given a different room.
When I did my on-line banking, I saw the first charge, made the same day for something in the amount of over $500 (I don't recall the exact amount). I immediately questioned the hotel manager, who had - until this day - been quite friendly to me; now she refused to see me. I immediately contacted my credit union, disputed the charge and cancelled the card at the credit union's suggestion. The said they would credit my account and said they were sending me paperwork to dispute the charge.
About 10 days later, and no longer at the hotel, I saw another charge to the SAME card for nearly $1000 on the same day.
Again, I called the credit union, this time po'd at the bank for allowing a charge from the same place after I had already disputed one and closed the card 10 days earlier.
The credit union credited (temporarily) all the money back to my account.
Six months later, and five months after being back in my home state, the credit union re-charged the amount to my account and closed my account, listing this as a charge off. Until I logged on and saw that noted on my account, I still believed we were in the "dispute process".
The dispute process as I knew it before my account was closed, was the bank having received a statement from the hotel that included a "bill" with my signature (it was NOT my signature) that was date stamped in April, which was three months after I had left the state where the fraudulent charges occurred and four months after I stayed at the hotel!
The bank admitted to me that they noticed this inconsistency even before I did. It seemed obvious to me, that it would be obvious to the bank that these were fraudulent charges.
BUT, NO! The bank asked me "Does it 'look' like your signature?" To which I answered, "Yes." However, I also told them that I had signed NOTHING when I stayed at the hotel on this occasion. In fact, I didn't sign anything when I stayed there previously. BUT, I did sign a check in card at a hotel two blocks away owned by the same couple on a previous stay.
SO, with that background, any suggestions on how I can get the bank to re-open my account AND I believe these people who fraudulently charged my account should be charged with a crime or at least pursued by the bank.
At this point, the bank and I are the one's to pay the price here, and the creeps who own the hotel have gotten away with this. (I did learn that the hotel manager had a past drug and money scamming problems - but it doesn't seem to matter as she's gotten away with this.)
