Got a letter from Wachovia that my PLUS loan was deferred for 1 yr due to economic hardship. I did not request this - and all they will say is that they have 100's of thousands of loans and things like this just happen. Yeah, right.

All i can think is DD put her loans into deferment and they could see this loan (even though its under my SS#) and put all into deferment, not realizing it was a PLUS. (I'm not even sure DD put hers into deferment - her 6 months deferment was up recently and she doesn't have a job yet so i assume she did.)

(I'm wondering if this is why it went from Wachovia on the TL to AES/New England within the last month.)

Your account is totally seperate from her's...they would not be able to see it by pulling her SS#. Think you need to call them.

Are you sure? I know the app had her SS# on it (the one i did this AM for another DD needed her SS#).

Anyway, i already called and a letter is in the mail - the guy said 'mistakes happen' and insisted they can't refund me the additional interest this costs (about $25) - he actually said because its calculated daily, there is no difference in the interest even though the July payment was never made. Me thinks he needs a loan of his own so he can go to college and learn how interest works. smile.gif

I'm supposed to get an interest credit for auto-debits and on time payments -I'm betting this mistaken deferment will screw that up too.

For plus loans, you alone are the borrower. The student has no liablity and no connection to the loan other than being the student. Her ssi# is not for the debt purpose but to cross reference where the money is sent.

Now i'm even more irritated by this deferment.

I talked to DD and her's were still in the 6 months graduation deferment when she went on the hardship deferment.

One more question - it's a federal loan so which agency or department do i complain to?

The loan deal was after xx ontime payments via auto debit, i get an interest credit. They sat on the paperwork for the debit and only processed it after i called to find out why it was not set up yet. Now i suspect this deferment will cost me that reduction. Two mistakes in a yr is two too many.
