I am new here and in just desperate need of help and advice. My boyfriend went to school and took out loans from sallie mae, he consolidated most of them into 1 but was not aware there was still one more and haven't paid a dime to it, he's been paying the consolidated loan monthly, now he received his first call yesterday from a collections agency (National Enterprise System) demanding him to pay a large amount of money for the loan he neglected to pay, my boyfriend doesn't have the money to pay full upfront, what else can he do to resolve this, he is willing to pay the debt just can't pay full, we need help and advice a.s.a.p because the collections agency won't stop calling our house and his work, harassing him, saying they will get in contact with his job and even mentioning lawsuits. Pls. help... thank you in advance.

Is this a private loan or federal? Sallie Mae offers both and your options moving forward will depend on which type your boyfriend has.

This really sounds like a private loan since if sallie mae was the only lender, they would have picked up all federal loans when they did the consolidation.
Private loans do file lawsuits on a regular basis. They will garnish and they will empty bank accounts.
Even private loans take a few months to default. Was your bf not reading his mail or answering his phone? I have seen pre default letters on SM private loans and they make it very clear what will happen.

I believe the sallie mae is private, it all started with 8 loans, he did consolidation and then the 6 turned to one which he's been paying, he thought the remaining 2 loans also turned to one as well, so from the time he graduated he's been paying two different loans never knowing there was another one, i hope this is clear. so the first call came yesterday but before that there were no mails, no warning whatsoever of him not paying this other loan, the first time we've heard of it was yesterday and now they want all of it, only if my bf knew about it he would have been paying it already. NES called today again and said there is a suit against him already, we asked them to send us a paper, a validation or anything and they said they don't have the time for that. they need the money now!!! i've researched all day and came across loan rehab program is that a possible approach to take? and who should we contact about it the orginal lender sallie mae or the collection agency NES? Thanks again...

Rehab is not an option for private loans.....rehab can only be done for defaulted federal loans.
